Duxford is Europe's premier aviation museum - as well as having one of the finest collections of tanks, military vehicles and naval exhibits in the country.
XXIIII, Sunderland, Oxford, Anson, Harrier, Buccaneer and Tornado.  Duxford's famous Concorde is also on display and open to the public for internal viewing.  Exciting, engaging and inspirational, AirSpace is a must for old and young alike.
Friends of Duxford is a joint venture between the Imperial War Museum and Duxford Aviation Society.

However, if you have the time to get up to Duxford, which is near Cambridge, then not only can you visit Cambridge, but if you time things right then you can visit the Imperial War Museum and see one of the airshows at Duxford.
Duxford has an excellent selection of aircraft, including quite a few which you won't see at Hendon; however, Hendon definitely has better facilities than Duxford.
However, the other main hangars are rather cramped and some of them are definitely showing their age; and sadly quite a few large historic aircraft are kept outside, exposed to the elements.

Duxford was built during World War One as one of the earliest RAF Aerodromes.
Duxfords first Hurricanes arrived 11 months later when escaped Czech Pilots formed 310 Squadron, soon to be joined 242 Squadron from nearby Coltishall, along with the still-present Spitfires of No19.
Duxford aerodrome, Base 357, RAF Duxford, is now home to the Imperial War Museum as well as many private owners and operators of warbirds, and is renowned for both the quality of its exhibits, and for hosting the premier warbird airshows in Europe.

 Flightline UK - Duxford Autumn Airshow 2006 = REVIEW
Duxford were clearly delighted and treated their French guests really very well making sure they were the stars of the show with a special banner tow from Anna Walker and her Skytricks Piper Cub and a parade in two Jeeps and Jane Larcombe's convertible Saab!!
Duxford has found it difficult recently to get the Red Arrows to it's displays so to have the French team was a major coup for the show and they had the honour of opening the show.
Duxford once again managed to surpass themselves with the Autumn Airshow, undoubtedly their best offering of the year and considering the quality of those just shows how good this show was.

Duxford has been a second home for me for many a year and for lovers of old aeroplanes it really is a Mecca.
Taxiing out I was conscious that we had quite an audience, the magnetic effect an aeroplane has on small children is amazing and soon there were scores of youngsters peering over the fence as we moved slowly to the hold.
With the vast acreage of grass at Duxford I found it quite difficult to find the start of the runway and needed some guidance by Rob as to where to taxi.

Filming at Duxford took place on the main airfield itself and in the south-west corner of the airfield where there is grass instead of concrete.

First opened in 1917 to support the Royal Flying Corps, Duxford would later become a major player in the Battle of Britain, serving as the operating base for Douglas Bader and his Hawker Hurricane equipped 242 Squadron.
After the war, Duxford continued to serve the RAF as a home for units operating the Gloster Meteor and Gloster Javelin before ceasing flight operations in 1961.
For those of you unable to walk the distance between all of the Duxford facilities, there is a tram that runs all day to carry you between all of the hangars and exhibit halls.

Like myself, many of the attendees at the Duxford VE Day Anniversary Air Show will have read in the aviation press over the dark winter months of the news of the latest restorations and imports to the UK Warbird scene and been hopeful of being amongst the first to see them in the air.
The next major airshow at Duxford is the world famous Flying Legends to be held on July 9 and 10, hopefully in better conditions.
