The province of Sakarya has been founded close to the South-West edge of the plain that has the same name with the province, so it has a location which is considered as a bridgehead and a junction point on the region where the historical Istanbul-Anatolia road goes beyond the river Sakarya.
The province land is surrounded by Duzce and mountain of Bolu from the East; by Golpazari and Osmaneli districts of Bilecik from the South; by Kandira, Izmit, and Golcuk districts of Kocaeli from the West, and by the Black Sea from the North in the term of administratition.
The weather in the province is rainy and humid, and the climate is mild.

Its epicentre was in the town of Duzce, on the main road between Ankara and Istanbul, 115 miles east of Istanbul - the same area where some 17,000 people were killed by an earthquake in August.
Duzce is about 150 miles from Bursa where the Republic of Ireland is due to play Turkey in the Euro 2000 qualifying match next Wednesday.

With the exception of Sakarya and Yalova provinces, the population sheltered in tent camps in Kocaeli, Bolu and Duzce provinces is higher than the population sheltered in prefabricated houses.
Despite contrary trends in Duzce province, it is observed that in general, the earthquake affected population is beginning to settle into the prefabricated cities, when compared to figures available in previous weeks.
Even though many residents of the provinces are able to obtain water from the municipal water network in some areas, they prefer to drink water from the tankers because of their concerns of water contamination due to broken pipes.

DUZCE, Turkey (AP) - After working through the night with floodlights, rescue teams searched in the rubble in northwestern Turkey today for survivors of a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the region the night before.
In Duzce (pronounced ``dooz-jeh''), military helicopters flew in to transfer badly wounded patients to hospitals in the Turkish capital of Ankara.
Duzce's hospital was evacuated after the quake, forcing doctors to set up small surgery units in the garden.

MSF had agreed to bring assistance to the regrouped population, in order to provide primary relief and prevent the outbreak of epidemics due to overcrowding, lack of drinking water and lack of shelter at the start of the rainy season.
