Capturing pieces that could capture a Dvonn piece can be important, as a moving Dvonn piece controlled by the opponent can isolate a large group of pieces.
Taking a Dvonn piece is especially desireable if it is possible to move it toward one's own pieces and away from their opponent's.

A DVONN stone cannot be moved by itself, but a stack may move on the top of it and move afterwards with all its stones (and so, moving the DVONN).
The white stack with the DVONN piece at f7 can move to d5, removing f8 which will be out of contact.

There are not too many critical decisions during the first phase, but one has to be mindful to
place pieces near the DVONN pieces, place disks on the edges and not cluster too many friendly pieces together.
Being aware of the DVONN pieces and where they can move is very important, as your opponent may move in a way to isolate your stacks, which can lead to disaster.

I found Dvonn immediately appealing and engaging, perhaps because of all the games in the Gipf Project, it entails the most familiar game playing concepts.
Dvonn has many of the characteristics of all the Gipf games (much more on this soon), with structures that are more traditional (making towers and gaining territory).
Gipf resembles the origins of continents, Tamsk is a desert, Zertz a polar ocean, Dvonn a volcanic landscape, and Yinsh a weather front crossing an open ocean.

I was lucky that I was able to go, and had a wonderful 2 days playing first GIPF and then DVONN for lots of hours.
Unfortunately, TAMSK is out of print, although you may be able to find a copy on eBay.

 BGG Thread: Best GIPF Titles
I picked up Dvonn at the Wizards of the Coast close out, played it (incorrectly) and figured everyone was crazy as I was completely unimpressed.
Gipf may well be the deepest of the series and I certainly am not equipped to judge it (indeed I have not yet even beaten the computer GF1 on level 2 so I seem to be missing some key strategic insight into this game) but it holds the least interest for me at this time.
Yinsh and Dvonn are practically equal in my estimation and my preference for one over the other changes from time to time.

First time, following a devilish blitz run of Speed where I lost which is good vitamin for him.
The dynamic of Dvonn, where severed vital links may throw all of a sudden out of the sand beach like board a bunch of holed bakelite circles, this dynamic is esthetically satisfying.
We played once but I forced upon him a positive appraisal, stating how nice this game is, how bright he is to play it when the average Dvonn player must be way past adolescence.
