We both thought that the dwarf tossing jokes, having appeared in not just FOTR but even more in TTT were out of place, groan-worthy, and definitely not true to the spirit of Tolkien's great work.
I would rather they had focused on their history and the entdraught (as they are in the extended addition) than the retarded dwarf jokes or horse kissing scenes with Aragorn (entirely unnecessary).
I thought the dwarf jokes (and select other jokes) were totally inappropriate in the scope of this film.

Salo, 33, is a UW-Madison doctoral candidate in linguistics, but more importantly, at least to movie fans, he's probably the world's leading expert on Sindarin and Queen, the Elvish languages author J.R.R. Tolkien invented as part of the extensive mythology underlying the trilogy.
For Salo, working on the movie presented a multi-level challenge: the language needed to be firmly based on Tolkien's creations, to satisfy the purists and director Peter Jackson, who went to great lengths to keep the movies faithful to the original work.
Salo also translated into Dwarvish, or Khuzdul, the runic inscriptions that appear on the walls of Moria, the dwarf stronghold inside the mountains.

But it's important to understand how Tolkien's conception of the Dwarves evolved, for as his ideas changed so did their imaginary history.
