Dwemer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The difficulty was prompted by the discovery of a mythological artifact known as the Heart of Lorkhan by the Dwemer, deep in the mountains' bowels.
Dwemer ruins are scattered across Vvardenfell and the island of Stros M'kai, and are characterized by two things; their beauty, generally consisting of great towers stretching into the sky, and their construction, made almost entirely of metal.
Dwemer artifacts are highly prized throughout the Empire, although since they are technically the property of the Emperor under the charter of the Imperial Society of Architecture and Design as well as the Imperial Historical Society, the sale of them is illegal.

 Tamriel:Dwemer - UESPWiki
The Dwemer are the fabled lost race of Mer whose ruins and artifacts are scattered across Tamriel, specifically within Morrowind, but even as far away as Hammerfell.
Meric races use the term “Dwemer”, meaning "deep folk" while the term “Dwarves” or “Dwarven” is a term created by the local giants of the Velothi Mountains.
The Dwemer, by all accounts, appear to have been a technologically advanced race, and most of their old settlements are inhabited by enchanted mechanical guardians built by them.

 Welcome to Aldrien's Chalice!
This was the culmination of the war between the Chimer and the Dwemer.
In addition, The War of the First Council claims that the Dagoth House was on the side of the Dwemer, and that the Nords and the Orcs fought with them.
The Dwemer were clever, in a twisted sort of way, and any reputable scholar of archeology would agree that the ruins of Stros M'Kai (flying machines and all) were made by Dwemer.

Tamriel:Books/Dwemer History and Culture - UESPWiki   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
While Marobar Sul's Ancient Tales of the Dwemer was definitively debunked in scholarly circles as early as the reign of Katariah I, it remains one of the staples of the literate middle-classes of the Empire, and has served to set the image of the Dwemer in the popular imagination for generations of schoolchildren.
Ancient Tales of the Dwemer was thus firmly established as a local favorite in Cyrodiil (already in its 17th printing) when the historical forces that propelled Tiber Septim to prominence also began to spread the literature of the "heartland" across the continent.
Marobar Sul's Dwemer were much more amenable to the spirit of the time, which saw humans as the pinnacle of creation and the other races as unenlightened barbarians or imperfect, lesser versions of humans eager for tutelage.

The Dwemer of Tamriel, also known as the Dwarves, were a reclusive Elven Clan who lived in Morrowind during the first era.
A good example of the attitude of the Dwemer is the story Azura and the Box, in which a Dwemer challenges Azura to a guessing game and tricks her.
Secondly, the last living Dwarf, Yagrum Bagarn, said that when the Dwemer disappeared he was in the "Outer Realms", and thus did not disappear with them.

In short, Nerevar and Dagoth Ur manage to infiltrate the Dwemer fortress at Red Mountain along with a small number of Chimer warriors, while the army of the Dwemer was kept busy in a nearby field by the Chimer army.
One way or another the one thing that is certain is that Nerevar died shortly after the battle at Red Mountain, whether he was murdered by the Tribunal or died of his wounds is not known.

Dwemer, meaning "Deep Elves", are thought to be a reclusive, independent group of Mer (Elves), dedicated to the principles of science, alchemy, and engineering.
The difficulty was prompted by the discovery of a mythological artifact known as the Heart of Lorkhan by the Dwemer.
The Chief Tonal Architect Kagrenac, their de facto religious leader, devised a set of tools to manipulate the Heart to instill divinity to his people, but the spell failed and caused all known Dwemer to vanish (Varying accounts state that their connection to the heart was severed, although this seems unlikely.

I think those dwemer weapons and armor are there as a result of poorly considered loot tables.
The Dwemer shunned the daedra in their worship of the logical/mathematical, so they wouldn't have done extensive trade to provide Oblivion with this exotic alloy that isn't nearly as good quality as the materials they already have in abundance: glass, ebony and daedric.
