Charles Schulz on the new face of YAGMCB
The 76-year-old Schulz may have to deal with a tremor in his drawing hand, but after 50 years of "Peanuts" cartoons he still creates and executes all his work by himself and remains supervigilant about spinoffs of his famous strip.
If Schulz appears sensitive about what he disdainfully refers to as "the so-called cutting edge," it may be because he suspects that people judge not only the original production of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" as out of step, but also his half-century-old comic strip.
Nonetheless, Schulz wasn't initially so happy when he heard a multiracial cast was being considered to play the familiar characters readers have never seen as anything but Caucasian.

Snoopy: A Beagle With Brains Becomes Teachers' Pet   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Schulz fought in World War II and identified himself as a veteran, but he didn't want to be seen as a warmonger, especially in the darkest years of the Vietnam War.
Stoddart said, Schulz preserved "the patriotic pro-war spirit of his own generation in a world decidedly against the escalating horrors of the Vietnam conflict" by portraying Snoopy as a World War I flying ace fighting a far less controversial war.
Schulz's obsessiveness about his strip, he said, seemed to have a defensive purpose.

Solomon had reported on July 6 that Columbo, a steer raised on Solomon's Gallagher's Farm in Gainesville, Virginia, was ready for butchering (AWF/N).
Schulz, who routinely took responsibility for the gifts Eisenhower received (see, for example, no. 469), would tell Solomon that the refrigeration facilities at the White House were not large enough to accommodate the entire carcass.
As it turned out, some of the beef would be shipped to Denver in anticipation of the Eisenhowers' arrival, and the hindquarters and ribs would be cured and stored on Solomon's farm to be delivered on request.
