	Skagway, Alaska and Dyea, Alaska during the Gold Rush
		The competition for stampeder dollars continued in Dyea and Skagway, Alaska, the towns at the trail heads for the two most popular routes over the mountains, the Chilkoot Pass and the White Pass.
		Dyea's harbor was not as deep as Skagway's, which meant that most of the ships landed their cargoes at Skagway.
		Dyea is on a sandy flat and the streets are decent, but there it is muck and clay and the streets wind in and out around stumps.

		The Dyea Flats at the estuary where the Taiya River meets Taiya Inlet has a eulachon run in late April and early May that attracts large numbers of harbor seals, Steller sea lions and bald eagles.
		The Dyea Flats is prime habitat for a variety of migratory and non-migratory birds, and there is excellent birding at the flats throughout the spring, summer and fall.
		Stop in pullouts along the road to Dyea for views of Long Bay, where relatively calm waters and abundant food sources attract harbor seals and harbor porpoises, as well as marbled murrelets, harlequin ducks and Barrow’s goldeneyes.

		Dyea reached its zenith in about May 1898, at which time the town had a population estimated at 5-8,000 people, served by 48 hotels, 47 restaurants, 39 saloons and 19 freighting companies.

		Of the 1,600 miles from Pioneer Square in Seattle to the gold fields of Dawson City, only the 26 miles from the 1897 boomtown of Dyea, Alaska, over Chilkoot Pass, 3,789’, to Lindeman City in British Columbia had to be completed on foot.
		Dyea was once a rival of Skagway, but lost favor when the railroad was built from Skagway.
