Rick Chappell, director of Vanderbilt University's Dyer Observatory, estimated that between 800 and 1,000 people turned up for the chance to look at the red planet through the observatory's 24-inch window onto the universe.
The observatory was scheduled to be open from 11 p.m.-3 a.m., but tailgaters caused officials to open the doors shortly after Mars rose from behind the trees in the southeast at 9:30.
However, the observatory's library, estimated to be about an hour's wait from the telescope, offered books, projected movies and interactive computer displays.
