Dike (construction) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A dike (or dyke) is a stone or earthen wall constructed as a defence or as a boundary.
Dykes can be permanent earthworks or emergency constructions (often of sandbags) built hastily in a flood emergency.
The dikes are typically merely simple earth embankments, though 20% are constructed from peat; two collapses of boezem dikes (due to water shortages, leading to the drying out of the peat) in 2003 have prompted urgent investigation of the entire Dutch dyke network.

Dyke Marsh is situated (approximately) in the middle of the tidal freshwater zone of the Potomac, about 95 miles upstream from the Chesapeake Bay and is strongly influenced by the daily tide cycles.
Dyke Marsh is largely a freshwater tidal marsh in the limnetic zone of the Potomac estuary with cattail forming the dominant vegetation cover of the open marsh areas.
The topography of Dyke Marsh is representative of the shallow littoral freshwater marsh complex of the Potomac estuary.

Science Fair Projects - Offa's Dyke
Offa's Dyke is a massive earthwork between England and Wales, running from the estuary of the River Dee in the north to the River Wye in the south (approximately 240 km).
The dyke is not continuous, being built only in areas where natural barriers did not already exist, so its total length is only 130 km.
Offa's Dyke Path, a footpath which mostly follows the route of the dyke, is one of the designated British National Trails.

Press Release - 40 years experience with geotextiles - HUESKER Synthetic
The use of geotextile materials in the construction of the dyke represented a pioneering achievement: for the first time a sea embankment toe was constructed using large sand-filled nylon containers - and the use of a geofabric to ensure slope stability was another first.
Above all, the side of the dyke, facing the sea, had to resist the ever-present impact of waves and the fury of winter flood tides.
The main function of the nylon containers was to ensure the resilience of the dyke during the initial construction, then a ten centimetre thick layer of sprayed concrete was applied to the containers to give the structure additional protection.

The dyke runs from near the city of Chepstow in the south to Prestatyn in the north.
Its construction was not very elaborate, consisting only of the earth that was removed on the Welsh side of the wall from the ditch.
The actual labor-intensive construction of the wall denotes the organizational skill of the ruler for which it was built.

Wat's Dyke is a similar linear earthwork running through the same borderlands as Offa's Dyke, but restricted to the north and to a mere 65 kilometers' length.
In order for the fire to prepare the way for construction, the people who set it must have chosen a period of the year when the flora was most susceptible to flames, before the spring greening which would rob their fire of its best fuel.
For whatever else the Dyke was, it was a bold manipulation of the landscape and an imposition of a new human form on the resilient earth, hills, and gorges of the borderland.

The dyke locations are as presented by Manitoba Natural Resources in public open houses held between the fall of 1997 and the spring of 1998.
The cost-benefit estimate for the various dyking schemes is also seriously flawed – the harmful consequences of the dyke on residents west of the river has not been taken into account.
Neither of these dykes is anticipated to have a significant hydraulic impact on flood levels, as both protect areas which are relatively high and would not store significant volumes of water during a flood.

Wat's in a name? - by Keith Nurse
The historical constructions or models that emerge from this view of the period are not as fanciful as might first seem.
As a frontier demarcation line, then, Wat’s Dyke may have had little or nothing to with divisions along English Welsh lines that later became associated with it, but, rather, pre-dated these divisions and reflected the political realities of rival kingdoms of an earlier age; a period of confused loyalties, military alignments and dynastic splits.
But it is argued that, when the area came under Mercian rule, Wat’s dyke had already been constructed and was functioning as a frontier, and that the renders in kind paid to the central court authorities (dues then approximating to then standard English units) were still commonplace in Shropshire at Domesday.

Freshwater Website: Floods (Reducing flood damage - Dykes)
Dykes are embankments built to protect low-lying areas from inundation and are the most commonly used structures to protect Canadian communities.
High water occurrence increases pressure against the dykes, accelerates their erosion, hastens their saturation and damage due to under-seepage, and may result in overtopping during extreme floods.
Dyke construction frequently necessitates the installation of internal drainage and pumping facilities to minimize flooding behind the dyke caused by seepage through the dyke, the interruption of the natural drainage within the protected area, and by the backing up of sewers during high stormwater runoff.

In spite of its establishment, there are lots of difficulties to completely carry out the environmental impact assessment, and it might sometimes be abused to proven the "justification" of the project without sufficient tests.
Anyway, it seems to be almost impossible that environmental impacts due to a man-made construction are exactly estimated, because there exist lots of difficulties, such as the long-term prediction, the economical change bringing a revolution in philosophy, etc. There are many plans of constructing the new infrastructure which need an appropriate environmental impact assessment.
Achieving the afore-mentioned purposes, the construction of sea-dyke and the reclamation of land are now being carried out.

The new information places the construction of the dyke within the shadowy period that began with the formal withdrawal of the Roman administration (AD 410) and ended with the absorption of the area into Mercia.
However, the radiocarbon date suggested that a fifth-century construction for the dyke `is more likely'.
In any event, Wat's Dyke went on to mark the formal boundary to north-west Mercia, and its importance as the western limit of the region lasted until the Norman Conquest.

Also, it has been successfully demonstrated that fly ash can be utilized in major construction projects such as dams, ash dyke, landfills, roads and pavements, soil stabilization and for other purposes such as brick manufacture, cement industry, tiles, and paint industry.
