In the Mabinogion Dylan's mother Arianrhod appears the daughter of Dôn and the sister of Gwydion and Gilfaethwy.

In the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogion, when Arianrhod applies for the position of virgin foot-holder to King Math of Gwynedd, she is asked to step over his magical wand as a test of her qualifying virginity, only to be instantly beset with the pains of childbirth.
Dylan is the child to whom she gives birth in a very public way.
