Dymaxion map - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dymaxion map of the Earth is a projection of a global map onto the surface of a three-dimensional regular solid, which can then be unfolded to a net in many different ways and flattened to form a two-dimensional map which retains most of the relative proportional integrity of the spherical globe map.
Fuller's Dymaxion map has many advantages over all of the other types of projections that render the 3D spherical globe as a 2D flat map.
The Dymaxion map does not perpetuate the cultural bias that is part of all other world map projections.

True, when Dymaxion are at their most vivid, you picture a caricatured, dreamlike world of men in trench coats, fedoras and sunglasses exchanging briefcases, eye-patched villains racing along Californian bluffs in fl, gizmo-laden Aston Martins, and disheveled mad scientists throwing large switches and animating limbs.
But it is essential to remember that Dymaxion were not intended to be taken in such large doses, and these facts in no way diminish the importance of the material presented here.

Dymaxion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term dymaxion was coined by inventor Buckminster Fuller as a compound of the words "DYnamic", "MAXimum" and "tensION".
Fuller's Dymaxion house actually took three forms: the 4-D Dymaxion House model of 1927, the 1944 corrugated silo Dymaxion Deployment Unit developed in association with Butler Manufacturing Company, and the hamburger-shaped 1944 Dymaxion Dwelling Unit (or Wichita House) developed with Beech Aircraft.

The Dymaxion Map is the only flat map of the entire surface of the earth that reveals our planet as it really is an island in one ocean without any visible distortion of the relative shapes and sizes of the land areas, and without splitting any continents.

In 1928 he had conceived a flying car with inflatable wings which was modified in subsequent drawings into a streamlined road vehicle the rear of which would rise in an aerodynamic lift to ‘fly’ steered by a rudder as the front rolled.
As relationships between the superpowers fluctuated during the war, Fuller became convinced of the need to develop a world map on which the whole globe could be seen at once; a map better suited than the standard Mercator Projection to the representation of global relationships.
The Dymaxion World Map was his attempt to resolve the problem of how best to represent a spherical world on a flat surface, with true scale, true direction and correct configuration.

He entitled the sketch "a one-town world." In 1946, Fuller received a patent for another breakthrough invention: the Dymaxion Map, which depicted the entire planet on a single flat map without visible distortion of the relative shapes and sizes of the continents.
After being spurned early in his career by the architecture and construction establishments, Fuller was later recognized with many major architectural, scientific, industrial, and design awards, both in the United States and abroad, and he received 47 honorary doctorate degrees.
