Dymaxion map - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dymaxion map of the Earth is a projection of a global map onto the surface of a three-dimensional regular solid, which can then be unfolded to a net in many different ways and flattened to form a two-dimensional map which retains most of the relative proportional integrity of the spherical globe map.
Fuller's Dymaxion map has many advantages over all of the other types of projections that render the 3D spherical globe as a 2D flat map.
The Dymaxion map does not perpetuate the cultural bias that is part of all other world map projections.

The Dymaxion Map is the only flat map of the entire surface of the earth that reveals our planet as it really is an island in one ocean without any visible distortion of the relative shapes and sizes of the land areas, and without splitting any continents.
The map projection used for this map, also know as the "Dymaxion Map," was created by R. Buckminster Fuller, distinguished mathematician, inventor and 20th century visionary.
It is the only flat map of the entire surface of the Earth which reveals our planet as one island in one ocean, without any visually obvious distortion of the relative shapes and sizes of the land areas, and without splitting any continents.

Buckminster Fuller was obsessed with this word "dymaxion" which I think was supposed to be a combination of "dynamic" and "maximum".
He created this "dymaxion map" of the world which was intended to have the least possible distortion of the shape of the land features.
The "usual" map projection (Mercator) is really terrible because it totally accentuates the size of land masses that are close to the poles.

Robert W. Gray's Fuller Notes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The great idea Fuller had for his "spherical" to plane map transformation was to project the polyhedron onto the sphere and then "unfold" the spherical triangle (and square in the case of the VE) into a plane polygon.
It is not appropriate to judge any map as being "good" or "bad" outside of the context in which it was intended to be used.
Based on Fuller's writings, it is clear that the primary function of the map was to allow people to view all of the major land masses without any of the maps borders passing through, and therefore dividing, the major land masses.
