The Dymaxion map of the Earth is a projection of a global map onto the surface of a polyhedron, which can then be unfolded to a net in many different ways and flattened to form a two-dimensional map which retains most of the relative proportional integrity of the globe map.
Unlike most other projections, the Dymaxion is intended purely for representations of the entire globe.
Each face of the polyhedron is a gnomonic projection, so zooming in on one such face renders the Dymaxion equivalent to such a projection.

The project that made Fuller’s name was the 1929 Dymaxion House, which he unveiled in the interior decorating department of the Chicago department store, Marshall-Field.
In 1928 he had conceived a flying car with inflatable wings which was modified in subsequent drawings into a streamlined road vehicle the rear of which would rise in an aerodynamic lift to ‘fly’ steered by a rudder as the front rolled.
The Dymaxion World Map was his attempt to resolve the problem of how best to represent a spherical world on a flat surface, with true scale, true direction and correct configuration.

Choosing the best projection for a particular application always involves a choice of which sort of distortion is going to represent the area of interest in the least harmful way.
The term Projection derives directly from the concept that a sillhouette of any sort of object can be projected onto a flat surface (as with a light source and screen.) In the case of (very simple) map projection, the object is a transparrent globe with geographic features drawn on it.
This projection overcomes the distortion problem inherent in the standard Mercator by simply puting the tangent line of the projection surface near the center of the area of interest.

My favorite has always been the Dymaxion projection, just because it makes the most sense to me. Start with a regular polyhedra which approximates a sphere, then unwrap it.
Your belief that mapmakers should not be concerned with their maps being "pleasing" is premised on the belief that there is a perfectly correct way to lay out a map and that any deviation from that in the name of asthetic liscense is improper.
