Nash was impressed by the vast sea wall at Dymchurch, a man-made structure designed to protect the Marsh from flooding from the sea.
Nash nearly drowned as a child and wrote that he associated the sea with 'cold and cruel waters, usually in a threatening mood, pounding and rattling along the shore'.
In paintings such as Dymchurch Wall 1923 and The Shore 1923, Nash translated the sea and landscape into a series of interlocking planes and geometric shapes, influenced by Cézanne's progressive fragmentation of nature.

It was originally proposed to build a four-gun tower at Dymchurch, but this idea was revised at the Rochester conference of 1804.
Dymchurch also underwent significant re-fortification during the Second World War, bunkers and pillboxes adorning its parapets.
The gun platforms were encased in concrete for machine-guns to be mounted, artillery emplacements constructed and an observation post erected.

Kevin Crouch lost his life after a tragic accident, his locomotive 'Hercules' of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway was struck by a car at the Burmarsh Road level crossing in 2003.
He started with his brother Andrew, Andrew left when he got married but Kevin stayed on with the rhdr and learnt all there was to know about this wonderful 15 inch gauge steam railway.
Whenever we visited the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway and saw Kevin he always had a big smile on his face.

 Laurel and Hardy Open the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.
On Saturday May 4th (2002) several bus loads of 'Sons of the Desert' arrived at Hythe Station in Kent to celebrate 'Laurel and Hardy's' visit in 1947.
Officially opened 16th July 1927, the RHandDR stretches for nearly 14 miles from the picturesque Cinque Port of Hythe via the popular holiday areas of Dymchurch, St. Mary's Bay and New Romney to the fishermen's cottages and lighthouses at Dungeness.
Looking at the newsreel we can see the hilarious scene of Stan and Teddy Smith, son of the Dymchurch railway stationmaster, who are trying to get Babe into one of the small Pullman coaches.
