Multimedia – From Wagner to Virtual Reality
Back in 1968 when I made this cardboard model I thought of it as the machine of the future and started thinking about what would it be like for millions of people to have one of these machines.
So we decided to follow Seymour Papert's lead and instead of trying to design for adults we would try and see what this Dynabook of the future would be like for children and then maybe hope some of it would spill over into the adult world.
Dynabooks will also be used as servers in the information utilities.

 Welcome to Squeakland
Yet even before his years at Xerox PARC, Kay had envisioned the Dynabook, which he described as "a portable interactive personal computer, as accessible as a book." The Dynabook would be linked to a network and offer users a synthesis of text, visuals, animation and audio.
Kay drew an initial pen and ink sketch of this device, which is widely considered the prototype for the notebook computer.
But what is really most significant about the idea of the Dynabook lies in the constructions that people, especially kids, can do with it, and which they can't do in any other way.

  Dynabook - OLPCWiki
The original Dynabook was to be a book-sized electronic slate computer that a child could carry with them.
Alan Kay developed this concept while he was working on the Smalltalk language and later created Squeak to implement Dynabook concepts on regular PCs.
The original description of the Dynabook, "A Personal Computer for Children of All Ages" by Alan C. Kay (In Proceedings of the ACM National Conference, Boston Aug. 1972) is still very much worth reading today.

  Dynabook - Definition, explanation
The Dynabook was a conceptual system proposed by Xerox PARC in the late 60s and early 70s.
The Dynabook concept described what is now known as a laptop computer or, (in some of its other iterations) a tablet PC or slate computer with nearly eternal battery life and software aimed mostly at giving children unlimited expression opportunities with all digital media imaginable.
Alan Kay was the main proponent of the Dynabook concept.

 Dynabook Usability
A summary of the early Dynabook studies reveal that it should weigh no more than 2 lbs and be quite thin in one dimension (so it and other things could be carried in one hand).
This number remained quite constant over the years and approaches (only being able to contemplate 500K pixels or less in the early days of PARC was one of the irritants that led to the overlapping window idea).
For the Dynabook, where I wanted a stylus for many reasons, I adopted this general scheme of navandrec with the stylus and keyboard for bulk input.
