"Don't quote me, boy": Dynamite Hack covers NWA's "Boyz-N-The-Hood" Popular Music and Society - ...
In 2000, Dynamite Hack, a white indie-rock band, covered NWA's "Boyz-N-The-Hood." Hack's cover complicates earlier assertions that rap songs cannot be covered, and it speaks to histories of white artist covers of fl RandB groups in the 1950s, as well as 1970s punk covers and their parody of rock performance.
I argue that Dynamite Hack is careful not to parody hip hop, and that instead the group uses the gangsta imagery of NWA's lyrics to parody their own whiteness its distance from hip hop credibility.
Twelve years later, I heard Dynamite Hack's cover of NWA's song "Boyz-N-The-Hood." I was teaching writing in a computer classroom at the University of Louisville, and a student found the song on Napster, the new high-tech version of the dubbed cassette passed in the hallway.

Dynamite Hack: Superfast - PopMatters Music Review
Dynamite Hack's cover of Eazy-E is a nod that we may have come full circle, and while it hasn't brought me back to hip-hop, it definitely pulls some nostalgic strings.
The problem in most cases, and most especially in the case of Dynamite Hack, is that the listener gets no indication of what the rest of the band's music is like.
Dynamite Hack doesn't write ballad-y songs as part of their formula, but their ability to pick an acoustic guitar compliments their electric songcraft.

The quirky post-grunge quartet Dynamite Hack was formed in Austin, TX, in 1997, taking their name from a line in the film Caddyshack.
Vocalist/guitarist Mark Morris, vocalist/bassist Chad Robinson, guitarist Mike Vlahakis, and drummer Chase Scott took their cues from bands like Weezer, Pavement, Jawbreaker, and the Barenaked Ladies.
The latter influence was especially apparent on Dynamite Hack's acoustic folk-rock cover of N.W.A.'s "Boyz 'N tha Hood," which became a local radio hit in the Austin/Dallas area in 1999.

Understandably, the Hack was expecting to sell well right out of the gate.
Before the national debut of Superfast, Dynamite Hack had been servicing the album to radio and retail themselves in Austin and Dallas, and was selling 1,100 units a week in those markets.

The catchiest tune on this Austin quartet's debut is the one that Dynamite Hack have grafted onto a Third Eye Blind-style cover of Eazy-E's gangsta standard "Boyz-N-the Hood." The song plays up the suburban-power fantasy that N.W.A partly became.
It's a cute idea, if also pretty tasteless -- lines like "I grabbed the stupid bitch by her nappy-ass weave" aren't improved by the fact that Dynamite Hack are snickering at them -- and radio stations that would never dream of playing actual hip-hop are pumping it.
But leading with a novelty cover screams "one-hit wonder," and, anyway, Sissy Bar's singalong version of "Gin and Juice" beat these guys to the joke five years ago.

Dynamite Hack occupies that well-trodden segment of punky post-grunge rock in which bands can't decide whether to concentrate on smirky novelty humor or more introspective songs about collegiate romantic angst.
Accordingly, their debut album Superfast is about evenly divided between these two wildly contrasting tones, sometimes mixing them in the same song.
