Dynamometer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A dynamometer, or "dyno" for short, is a device used to measure RPM and torque from which power produced by an engine or other rotating device can be calculated.
The dynamometer may be connected to a computer which calculates the output of the engine.
An engine dynamometer measures power and torque directly from the engine's crankshaft (or flywheel), when the engine is removed from the vehicle.

DYNAMOMETER - LoveToKnow Article on DYNAMOMETER   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The name has been applied generally to all kinds of instruments used in the measurement of a force, as for example electric dynamometers, but the term specially denotes apparatus used in connection with the measurement of work, or in the measurement of the horse-power of engines and motors.
Apparatus is added to some dynamometers by means of which a curve showing the variations of P on a distance base is drawn automatically, the area of the diagram representing the work done; with others, integrating apparatus is combined, from which the work done during a given interval may be read off directly.
In spring dynamometers designed to measure a transmitted torque the mechanical problem of ascertaining the change of form of the spring is complicated by the fact that the spring and the whole apparatus are rotating together.

Basically what we want a dynamometer to do is give us the same result (say 100bhp) on the same engine every time we dynamometer test it!
So provided that our new formulas (now lumped together and called correction factors) works as it should we should be able to read the same 100 BHP from our Corrected Dynamometer figures under all conditions.
This pressure and temperature data has to be measured, and entered as figures, or sensed automatically depending on which dynamometer system we are using directly just before each "run" is made.
