Dynamometer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A dynamometer or "dyno" for short is a device used to measure power and torque produced by an engine.
The dynamometer is connected to a computer which uses math to calculate the output of the engine.
An engine dynamometer measures power and torque directly from the engine's crankshaft (or flywheel), when the engine is removed from the vehicle.

The dynamometer car was therefore developed to measure the actual pulling forces, and the resistance to these forces, encountered with a locomotive in actual service on a train of known weight and configuration.
The dynamometer car was used to do a number of jobs: First, to determine tonnage ratings for various types of locomotives over various divisions or sections of a railway, which helped decide on pusher districts and the types of locomotives to be used on various classes of trains.
The car remained in use until the 1960s, testing first-generation diesels, and in the late 1970s DM-1 was finally retired and given to the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, where it may be seen today.

A dynamometer car is a railroad maintenance of way car used for measuring various aspects of a locomotive's performance.
Measurements include tractive effort (pulling force), power, top speed, etc. Although now advanced calculations make the dynamometer join the ranks of obsolete equipment such as cabooses and steam locomotives, it was certainly a valuable asset when it was used.
