  Family Scarabaeidae - Dynastes hercules
Of all the world's rhinoceros beetles, Dynastes hercules is probably the most famous.
There are a number of subspecies distributed across Central America and northern South America which can be distinguished primarily by the particular shape of their horns.
This particular individual does not bear the many small fl spots on the elytra which are typical of most examples of the species.

The Hercules beetle (Dynastes hercules) is the most famous of the rhinoceros beetles.
It is the largest of the 6 species in the Dynastes genus, and one of the largest beetles known, being exceeded in length by only two other beetles in the family Cerambycidae, Macrodontia cervicornis (specimens of 170-175 mm are known) and Titanus giganteus (several 180+ mm specimens are known to exist).
The Hercules beetle is said to be the strongest creature on earth for its size, able to carry 850 times its own body weight.

An even more striking example of the profound effects that heterochrony can have on morphology is shown by Dynastes hercules, another charming beetle (this time the male is about 13.5 inches long).
It seems "obvious" that there has been selection for the horn in the male, but the selection target may have simply been for large size, with the horn growth as a selection-neutral (or even at a cost to fitness?) consequence of allometric growth.
Of course selection may not be operating on these beetles (Dynastes as well as Macrodontia) at all.

Introduction to the Coleoptera   (Site not responding. Last check: )
It has been estimated that half of all animal species alive today are beetles; using a conservative estimate of the number of animal species, there would be at least three million beetle species on the Earth.
The Coleoptera also includes some of the largest insects, like the living Hercules beetle, Dynastes hercules, shown here.
Coleoptera means "sheathed wing;" beetles have two pairs of wings, but the first pair has been enlarged and thickened into a pair of hard sheaths, or elytra, that cover the delicate hind wings.
