The Bicycle And The Chinese People; the bicycle as a metaphor for the early influence of western technology in China
Whether problems in the building of a public transport system, adequate to the needs of a "socialist" society, were the practical arguments for the endorsement of bicycle traffic, or whether there were ideological reasons, may be left to further research.
As a matter of fact, the bicycle received strong support by the Chinese government in different ways: the cycle industry, which was established by merging smaller manufacturers into larger national firms, was given preferential allowances of rationed materials.
The spread of the bicycle as a common means of transportation was further fostered, after the foundation of the People's Republic of China, by subsidies to the cycle industry and to cycle users.

The second phase of the dynastic cycle began with the rule of the "martial emperor," Wu Ti, in 141 B.C.E. Old policies like government monopolies on salt, iron, liquor, etc. were established to maintain control of China.
This dynastic cycle begins with internal wars that eventually lead to the military unification of China.
But then the cycle turns downward because of the increased costs of empire and opulence at court, which require additional taxes on a burdened populace.

The FULL MOON theme of this lunar cycle is found in the conjoining stars at the tail of the Great Bear--bring us to a point of "discernment" to see behind the facades and diversions of life, to see who is who in our lives and what is truly important.
The time now in the great cycle, and the events transpiring on the world stage, support us to wake from the dogmatic belief structures inherent within us all and to live as self aware, self-responsible beings, co-participating in our uniqueness and in harmony together on Earth.
At the dark point in the precessional cycle (pre-dynastic Egypt), the leaders aligned with Benatnasch were thought to be saviors, leading the people--and this continues today although totally in a putrescent fashion, one clearly antiquated.

Typically used in units such as xxx kilocycles (thousand cycles) per second, xxx megacycles (million cycles) per second, etc., where xxx is some number.
The cycles per second is often implicit such as in "this station broadcasts at 680 kilocycles" - this is taken to mean "680 kilocycles per second" or 680,000 cycles per second.
The "cycles per second" is now usually expressed with the unit "hertz", named in honor of the pioneering physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz and defined as "cycles per second".

Often called the dynastic model, this hypothesis of wealth accumulation for bequest purposes suggests not that people try to smooth consumption over their lifetimes, but that they perceive their welfare as being directly related to the well-being of their children.
More damaging, perhaps, is that mathematical models of dynastic savings behavior are notably unsuccessful at generating wealth distribution patterns that resemble the actual U.S. distribution of wealth.
A 1994 dynastic model by S. Rao Aiyagari, for example, fell far short of generating as much inequality in wealth distribution as actually exists in the United States.

Write a paper in which you evaluate to role of the dynastic cycle in shaping the history of the Imperial China from 221 BCE to 1644 CE by discussing what you feel are the four most important trends that occurred in this period of history.
For each trend: 1) explain why it is important and 2) evaluate the influence of the dynastic cycle on it.
The content grade will be based on your choice of trends, your analysis of the dynastic cycle’s influence on the trends, and your ability to support arguments with persuasive evidence from the notes and reading assignments.

 Periodization
Traditional Chinese historiography divided the country’s history into dynastic periods and explained the divisions by reference to a dynastic cycle.
Some modern historians, while accepting that the personal qualities of its rulers had some influence on a dynasty’s fortunes, have argued that the dynastic cycle was essentially the product of economic and administrative factors.
Even if the concept of the dynastic cycle has some validity, a repetitive cycle is not a consistent feature in imperial history.

Its history follows a general pattern of repetitive cycles of waxing and waning that allowed the far-western and southern periphery of China to become ethnically and linguistically diverse as these regions periodically fell out of centralized control.
With the disintegration of this dynastic regime, provincial revolts or foreign invasion follows with the establishment of a new dynasty, and the cycle resumes.
This dynastic system began in the late 3rd century BC and ended in 1912 AD (though some scholars argue that after Mao came to power in 1949, Communist China follows a typical dynastic cycle).

One result of this focus has been to associate certain patterns of famine relief and grain storage with the dynastic cycle: bureaucratic intervention in food crises was successful when dynasties were strong; obligations for famine relief fell upon the shoulders of local elites when state coffers were depleted.
Using a diary and other materials about a famine in Shaoxing in the early 1640s-that is, on the eve of dynastic collapse-Joanna Handlin Smith detects few signs that state authority (as embodied in local officials) was weak or that the procurement of grain was a dominant problem.
This paper will explore: (1) the significance of these patterns, and whether they really marked new trends, or whether they were merely part of the dynastic cycle, and (2) the impact of these changes on the local areas receiving relief.

However, the five Chinese scientists argue that climate plays a key role as well; and to examine their thesis, they compared proxy climate records with historical data on wars, social unrest and dynastic transitions in China from the late Tang to Qing Dynasties (mid-9th century to early 20th century).
This work revealed that war frequencies, peak war clusters, nationwide periods of social unrest and dynastic transitions were all significantly associated with cold phases of China's oscillating climate.
As a result, they concluded that climate change was "one of the most important factors in determining the dynastic cycle and alternation of war and peace in ancient China," with warmer climates having been immensely more effective than cooler climates in terms of helping to "keep the peace."
