Freeman Dyson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Freeman John Dyson (born December 15, 1923) is an English-born American physicist and mathematician, famous for his work in quantum mechanics, nuclear weapons design and policy, and for his serious theorizing in futurism and science fiction concepts, including the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
Dyson conceived that such structures would be clouds of asteroid-sized space habitats, though science fiction writers have preferred a solid structure: either way, such an artifact is often referred to as a Dyson sphere.
Dyson has also proposed the creation of a Dyson tree, a genetically-engineered plant capable of growing on a comet.

Dyson sphere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A star contained within a Dyson sphere would not be directly visible to the outside universe, but the Dyson sphere itself would radiate an equivalent amount of energy in the form of infrared light due to solar heating from within.
In addition, since Dyson spheres are composed of solid matter instead of heated gas, the emission spectrum of the Dyson sphere would more closely resemble a fl body spectrum than the typical emission spectrum of a star, which has absorption features introduced in the stellar atmosphere.
A third type of Dyson sphere called a "Dyson bubble" is occasionally considered, composed of beans that hover motionless relative to the englobed sun using light pressure; this form of Dyson sphere has such low mass requirements that it could potentially be built from the material contained in a single small moon or large asteroid.

 Dyson sphere
Dyson calculated that, if mankind's current Malthusian (exponential) growth rate in energy consumption were to continue, the human race would reach a crisis point within the next two to three millennia (see Malthus, Thomas Robert).
Dyson replied that what he actually envisaged was a loose collection of over 100,000 objects traveling on independent orbits in a shell about 1 million kilometers thick.
Dyson's intended (fragmented) arrangement may be referred to as a Type I Dyson sphere and a solid shell as a Type II.

Dyson recalls that his parents expressed their affection by encouraging him to explore arts and culture; they were in their early 40s when they started their family: "[Being raised by my mother and father] was more like being with grandparents than parents, but they certainly loved us in their own fashion.
Dyson translated his mother's lesson to fit what he believed was happening between the military and anti-nuclear activists: "Wherever one looks into the world of human organization, collective responsibility brings a lowering of moral standards.
Dyson is a credible analyst because he is a man who has tasted war, having served in the British military while wrestling with his conscience over the morality of war and all that goes with it.

Freeman Dyson was born in 1923 in Crowthorne, Berkshire, England.
Dyson is a fellow of the Royal Society, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, a honorary fellow of Trinity College and an Associé Etranger de l'Académie des Sciences.
Dyson originally calculated that there is enough matter in the solar system to create a shell at least three meters thick, but this might be an overestimate since most matter in the solar system is hydrogen and helium, which isn't usable as building materials (as far as we know today).

Origins of Life (Freeman Dyson) - book review
In putting metabolism before replication, Dyson follows in the footsteps of Oparin, who proposed a similar "enzymes before genes" approach back in 1924; other avowed inspirations include Schrödinger, von Neumann, Eigen, Orgel, Margulis, and Kimura.
Dyson constructs a "toy" model, a system of recombining monomers in which "alive" and "dead" can be defined.
A theoretical physicist venturing into biology, Dyson avoids the obvious pitfalls: he is suitably humble, even self-deprecating in places ("this philosophical hot air"), and he offers useful insights from a physicist's perspective without getting carried away either by his own pet ideas or by metaphorical applications of physics to biology.
