The original Dzogchen Monastery was founded in Eastern Tibet in the 17th century by the First Dzogchen Rinpoche, Pema Rigzin, in accordance with the directions of the Great Fifth Dalai Lama.
During the time of the fifth Dzogchen Rinpoche, Thubten Chökyi Dorje (1872-1935), Dzogchen Monastery was at the peak of its activity with up to 500 monks residing, 13 retreat centres and an estimated 280 branch monasteries.

 Current Biography of The Seventh Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche
The seventh and current Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche was born at Rumtek Monastery (Dharma Chakra Center) in Sikkim, India in 1965.
In 1968, at Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim, India, at the age of three, his hair was cut by Holiness Karmapa, from whom he received the refuge vows and the name Karma Sungrap Ngedon Tenpe Gyaltsen.

Following the decline of Chongye Palri Thegchog Ling monastery and the flourishing of Shechen Monastery, the mother monasteries became Dorje Drag and Mindroling in the upper region, Shechen and Dzogchen in the center, and Kathok and Palyul in the lower part of Tibet.
During this time, with the help of Acharya Padmasambhava and Bodhisativa Shantarakshita, the teachings of Sakyamuni Buddha and commentaries of the Indian scholars of Nalanda University were translated in very pure form at Samye, the first Tibetan monastery.
