  E.C. Tubb: Critical Essay
Tubb writes of a hostile universe where men seek to dominate each other, and nowhere is it as hostile or extensive as in the Dumarest saga.
Tubb can also play with concepts of time and space; in S.T.A.R. Flight the instantaneous transport Gates of the dictatorial Kaltich are a puzzle to be solved, rather bloodily, by Earth's resistance organization.
Tubb works in a highly colored imaginative landscape, but like Dumarest he does hisjob quickly and then moves on, convictions unchanged, to the next world.

The Jester at Scar is the fifth of Tubb's Dumarest of Terra novels.
On the one hand such things as his role in the pirated Ace editions of The Lord of the Rings, and his promotion of lots of low grade SF with famously crummy titles and tiny advances must be disparaged.

Tubb, though, did not despair, even when the pop publishers collapsed, and in the 1960s he was still around to start the Dumarest of Terra and Cap Kennedy series for American houses such as DAW.
Tubb was trying to live by his writing, while other authors of the fifties (Clarke and Ballard, for instance) waited until their writing could support them, which perhaps threatened to write him out.
Wallace and Harbottle argue that one of the identifying elements in Tubb's work is its use of logic - but that would not have been obvious at the time.
