Cook's first journey lasted from August 26,1768 to July 13, 1771, when he sailed to Tahiti on the Endeavor in order to observe Venus as it passed between the Earth and the Sun (this is called the transit of Venus).
Cook sailed to New Zealand on October 6,1769, where he and his crew fought with the Maori (the earliest inhabitants of New Zealand) and mapped much of the two major islands (the strait between these two islands is now named Cook Strait) and showed that is was not part of a larger southern continent.
Cook arrived at Capetown, South Africa, on October 18, 1776, and sailed to the Indian Ocean and on to New Zealand (in early 1777), the Cook Islands, and Tonga.

Abner Cook, carpenter, architect, and contractor, was born near Salisbury, North Carolina, on March 15, 1814, the son of William and Susanna (Hill) Cook.
Cook arrived in Texas just as the fledgling republic was beginning the construction of a new capital city on the western frontier, to be called Austin.
Cook's largest residential project of the postwar era was a two-story Italianate house for cattle baron Seth Mabry at Twelfth and Lavaca (1876).

Cook was married to Miss Margaret Davis, who was born in Tennessee, daughter of Chissim Davis, who brought his family to Illinois in 1850 and became a leading agriculturist in Franklin county, where his death occurred in 1860.
Cook was a consistent member of the Christian church, and she and her husband had a family of three children, Rufus E., W. and R. Cook.
Rufus E. Cook was educated in the common schools, and when his father died, in 1872, he was compelled to start to make his own way in the world.

Cook concluded, "Thus, the news media may be a political institution, but more like the intermediary institutions of party and interest group than the three constitutional branches of legislature, executive and judiciary" (110).
Cook also discusses the fact that many stories are only two sided and do not show varying view points suggesting that many groups do not receive the proper media coverage.
Chaffe said that Cook provided an organized, readable and well crafted book about the news medias role in the government, but the book omitted some important components of the topic: other systems were not compared, little attention to levels of government outside the White House, and no mention of media effects on political opinions.

Cook was taken on as a merchant navy apprentice in their small fleet of vessels plying coal along the English coast.
Cook surveyed the northwest stretch in 1763 and 1764, the south coast between the Burin Peninsula and Cape Ray in 1765 and 1766, and the west coast in 1767.
Cook calculated that Van Diemen's Land ought to lie due south of their position, but having found the coastline trending to the southwest, recorded his doubt that this landmass was connected to it.

The fact that Charles W. COOK is listed as a surveyor of highways for the general neighborhood of the Earle home at Waterboro Town Meetings for 1852, 1855, and 1857 (not to mention his future wife lived nearby), strongly suggests this entry also refers to him.
Cook completed 25 years of service for the company in 1949, he was presented with a gold watch and a certificate of distinguished service.
Cook retired, he was honored at a testimonial dinner at which company officials praised his work and many years of service.

The proof that Samuel Cook was the same person as the one who showed up in 1808 in Baldwin County, Georgia rests mainly on a Bible record.  A family Bible belonging to Samuel Cook’s daughter Caroline Cook Weaver, found in the possession of Mary B. Williams of Thomaston, Georgia, makes the case nicely.
Samuel Cook was taxed on this 202 acres in 1811, but acquired most of Lot 20 in two transactions in 1813 and 1825.
Beall “the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Cook, and widow of J. Beall” died of yellow fever in Montgomery, Alabama on 16 December 1873.

Samuel Cook was either born in Surry County, North Carolina or moved there as an infant.
Samuel Cook married 17-year old “Eliza Hendrick” on 23 January 1803 according to the Weaver Bible.  The Surry County, North Carolina marriage bond, which calls her “Betsa Hendrick”, is dated 17 January 1803, with his brother David Cook as bondsman.
Samuel Cook’s 1820 household included a woman aged over 45.  In 1830, Sarah E. Cook’s household included only the two youngest Cook sons.  Andrew Jackson Cook, who would have been 15 that year, is not in the household, nor is he in the household of his guardian, Travis Weaver.
