Some Notes on Harold Visiak   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Visiak's biographical contributions were intriguing but his interpretations of Lindsay's novels were less than wholly convincing - particularly his attempts to see Christian dogma in A Voyage to Arcturus - and the result was that I felt no particular urgency to read anything else by him.
If Visiak's childhood was a kind of Paradise, then this episode marked his expulsion from that Paradise but with the hint that mystical experiences may enable occasional returns to that Paradise.
Visiak's comments on A Voyage to Arcturus - particularly his attempts to see Christian dogma in it - are not very convincing but his desire to advertise the 'magic' of The Haunted Woman attests to a real love for that book.

But I took great encouragement from T E Lawrence's phrase about having seen people in the desert push themselves to a tremendous extreme but there was never a break unless it came from inside, from the mind itself.
And one of the writers I admired most of all was H G Wells.
It was like D H Lawrence's view, that in moments of magnificent intensity we really seemed to see the meaning of life, whereas philosophy or intellect tended to take that away.

Canadian professor Dr. Alvin E. Rodin spent several days in Portsmouth and Southsea in 1982 and exploded the myth that Doyle was a struggling, starving doctor who took up writing as a way of improving his financial circumstances.
The evidence shows that he was actually a successful physician and only left Southsea because he was getting bored with general practice and, also, wanted more time for writing, which was his first love.

Shiel's Collaborators III: John Gawsworth (Terence Ian Fytton Armstrong) (1912-1970)
The fantasy author E. Visiak (The Haunted Island, etc.) contributed "The Uncharted Islands," co-authored by Gawsworth.
And Shiel's "The Falls Scandal" was a collaboration with Fytton Armstrong, as was "The Master" (another one lifted in part from "He Wakes an Echo").
Certainly the Shiel-Gawsworth collaborations gave Derleth a precedent, when he placed H. Lovecraft's name in front of his own on The Lurker at the Threshold, a novel he wholly wrote himself but for a few hundred words.
