Remington and Sons embarked on a new venture, and in September of 1873, the first Remington typewriters were produced.
Remington purchased the commercial farm and wildlife refuge of the late Glenn L. Martin, consisting of 2,970 acres of property near Chestertown, Maryland.
Remington acquired the Hazen, Arkansas plant from the Van Heusen Shirt Co. Some of the Powder Metal operations moved from the Ilion plant to Hazen, and the plant became operational in 1980.

The early Remingtons wrote only in capital letters, but in 1878 the carriage shift was made possible by two inventions.

Remington in addition was one of the most successful gun manufacturers in the world arms trade between 1867 and 1900, specifically through the export of the Remington Rolling Block action rifle.

Since 1816, Eliphalet Remington II and his employees supplied the gunsmiths of the region and eventually the nation with superior rifle barrels from the family forge and foundry, first in rural Herkimer County, and then at Ilion.
As the couple's only son of their four children, Eliphalet II would follow in his father's footsteps and enter the flsmith trade at the family's rural forge in Herkimer County, New York.
Upon Eliphalet's death in 1861, his son, Philo, took over the firm during the Civil War, and diversified the product line to include sewing machines (manufactured from 1870 to 1894) and typewriters (1873), both of which were exhibited at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876.
