E.T.A. Hoffmann - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hoffmann's work illuminates the darker side of the human spirit found behind the hypocritical harmony of bourgeois life, yet his wide-ranging influence upon and creative significance within the later German romantic period is frequently underestimated.
Hoffmann's portrayal of the character Kreisler (a genius musician) is wittily counterpointed with the character of the tomcat Murr—a virtuoso illustration of artistic pretentiousness that many of Hoffmann's contemporaries found offensive and subvertive of Romantic ideals.
Hoffmann's stories were tremendously influential in the 19th century, and he is one of the key authors of the Romantic movement.

 FULL BIO...
In a sense Herbert Hoffmann was the heir to Warlich.
As early as 1955 Herbert Hoffmann applied for a trade license in Dusseldorf as a tattooer; it was refused on the grounds that this activity was not a trade.
In 1981 Herbert Hoffmann handed his tattoo parlour over to a nephew and moved to Switzerland with Jack, who was by then a very sick man. The two of them had been left a delightful little chalet with a view of the Alps and Lake Constance by their old friend Walter Saxer, a Swiss dancer.

The couple divorced when Hoffmann was two years old and he went to live with his mother in the depressing and bizarre household of his maternal grandmother, a religious fanatic who lived with her two daughters and son, Otto.
Hoffmann caricatured the officials and proceedings of the commission in one his stories and, though he made the appropriate changes before publication, the police chief brought charges against Hoffman nevertheless.

 An Interview with Roald Hoffmann
Hoffmann: I agree that we need a general public that is knowledgeable about chemistry so that people in the various approximations of democracy that the world aspires to can make intelligent decisions, unseduced by "experts" who can be found for any side on an issue.
Hoffmann was born in eastern Poland in 1937, just before that part of his native country was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1939.
Hoffmann: As I finished my undergraduate career at Columbia I was caught between the wonders of chemistry and the sweet seduction of the humanities, especially art history.

Josef Hoffmann and the Architectural Clock
Hoffmann’s work has that quality, and it is the sensitivity and the capacity to produce and make it work that has made Hoffmann an indispensable figure in that generation between the past and the future—a generation that so beautifully extended the art of architecture and the design of objects.
Hoffmann, who beyond the notorious ideology of the Secession had extended himself with the founding of the Werkstätte, found his brilliant sensuality more than his dialectical instincts to be his natural avenue of realization.
Hoffmann represented the previous generation, particularly to those who espoused the canonical doctrine of the moderns as a moralistic stance.

Hoffmann's troubles with the Prussian government continue.  In the spring of this year, his story, Prinzessin Brambilla was written, and in the fall, Vol.
Hoffmann's Bamberg appointment did not only start his musical career, but also his 'sideline' as writer of musical articles and of 'musical fiction'.  The influence on Hoffmann of his own experiences ultimately also leads to the emergence of the poet Hoffmann.

 E. T. A. Hoffmann: Background Context
Hoffmann's parents were members of the upper bourgeoisie who had been connected with the law and respectability for generations; but theirs was a preposterously ill-fated marriage, and what Hoffmann called "a comedy of domestic dissension" ended divorce before he was three.
The German romantic in general, and Hoffmann in particular, was essentially concerned with the artistic depiction of a world in which the ordinary and the prosaic were imbued with the extraordinary and incomprehensible, where the "supernatural agency" was given full sway.
Hoffmann admired Sterne's apparently haphazard technique of narration and saw this purposeful breaking of illusion and "detachment" (romantic irony) as a refined and subtle technique which found a parallel in the willful caprice of many of the German novels of the time, especially jean Paul's.

 Introduction to E.T.A Hoffmann
Hoffmann himself represents the double aspect of the bourgeois citizen and the anti-establishment bohemian artist which led to him being praised and at the same time misunderstood and condemned by contemporaries and future generations alike.
Hoffmann was part of the German Romantic period with his fantastic fairy tales and historical stories, and at the same time transcended Romanticism with his realistic, psychological depictions of highly gifted and artistic, yet tormented souls.
Whilst Hoffmann's complete works have been translated many times in France and proved strongly influential on French writers, particularly in the 1830s and 1840s, Hoffmann is only known in extracts in the English speaking world.

 Felix Hoffmann - Pharmaceutical Achievers
He instructed Hoffmann to acetylate morphine with the objective of producing codeine; the result, instead, was a substance that was named "heroin." Like aspirin, heroin had already been discovered in 1874 by English chemist C.R.A. Wright, and so was unpatentable.
As soon as Hoffmann succeeded in the acetylation of salicylic acid to produce acetylsalicylic acid, Heinrich Dreser, the head of Bayer's pharmaceutical laboratory, tested the substance for toxicity on himself, and then set up a series of animal experiments.
Son of a manufacturer in the town of Ludwigsburg in Swabia, Germany, Felix Hoffmann first found employment in pharmacies in various cities and towns around Germany.
