The E3 Series Shinkansen are new Japanese Shinkansen high-speed trains built for the opening of the new Akita Shinkansen 'mini-Shinkansen' line, converted from a regular 3'6" narrow-gauge line between Morioka and Akita.
Like the 400 Series Shinkansen these trains are built to a smaller loading gauge to fit on the narrower clearances of the 'mini-Shinkansen'.
The initial units built starting in 1997 were 5-car sets, but sixth cars were built to integrate into the existing units by the end of 1998.

When I was in Japan (spring of 1993), I had a chance to ride a Shinkansen (bullet train) from Hiroshima to Tokyo.
As of the middle of September 2003, I've got a complete (16-car) 100-series Shinkansen and an E3 Komachi Shinkansen model, plus one steam engine (D51 498, a 2-8-2 that ran next to the E3 during its opening).
The setting is the early 1990's (probably '93), and 100-series shinkansen trains offering "Kedakasa" ("Nobility") service between the fictional city of Shujinkoumachi and the rural mountain town Mokidate to the north.

I only rode on the Shinkansen 300 and 700 "Hikari Rail Star" series because when I went this summer and used Japan Rail Pass, they don't allow you to board the Nozomi service, which uses mostly 500 series.
For the Tokaido, Sanyo lines, they seem to use the older 300 series a lot for Hikari service whereas for the JR East Shinkansen lines, they use much newer trains.
Series E4 /16cars(all double-decked) /1,634seats(the largest capacity in the world!)
