E4 (channel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
E4 is a British digital television channel launched as a pay-tv companion to Channel 4 on 18 January 2001.
In May 2005, E4 began to air "First Look", offering viewers the opportunity to watch an episode of popular programmes, such as Hollyoaks, and drama series, such as Lost and Invasion, in advance of their airdate on Channel 4.
E4 launched a dedicated Republic of Ireland service in June 2002 and the channel has become the second largest viewed satellite/digital channel in Ireland next to Sky One.

Plans to turn the pay TV channel into a free offering were first outlined earlier this year as part of a "long-term" digital strategy.
Channel 4 had been faced with something of a dilemma when deciding to make the switch: it already had in place a long-running agreement with Sky for carriage of E4 as a pay TV channel until 2008.
Channel 4 has a number of free broadcast spaces on Freeview, and is widely expected to secure yet another from transmission company Crown Castle.

 OFF THE TELLY: Features/E4/Big Thursday
Just as it did this time last year, E4 is unashamedly seeking to publicise and validate itself entirely off the back of a couple of imports - albeit ones that demonstrably pull in a million or so viewers.
But E4's largely unsatisfactory first year arguably rested upon more fundamental factors; namely, a continuing and palpable ambiguity over who and what the channel was for; the exact nature of its relationship with Channel 4; and its efforts to successfully configure a positive and constructive role to play in digital multi-channel broadcasting of the future.
When E4 began, its afternoon and early evening schedules were grouped together in one strand and dubbed T4 to tie-in with C4's popular Sunday morning brand.
