In November 2003, EADS announced that it was considering working with Japanese companies, and the Japanese METI, to develop a hypersonic airliner intended to be a larger, faster, and quieter, replacement for the Concorde, which was retired in October the same year.
EADS is a major contributor to the International Space Station, and is expected to deliver Columbus in 2007 through its subsidiary EADS SPACE Transportation.
EADS has first refusal on the share and is the most likely to purchase it but the magazine states that the two partners discussed a sale in the summer of 2005 and were unable to agree a price.

EADS SPACE Transportation (acronym: EADS-ST) was formed in June 2003 from the Space Infrastructure division of Astrium (whose core was originally ERNO) and the EADS Launch Vehicles division (formerly Aerospatiale's Space division).
The SPACE Transportation company is prime contractor for the Ariane 5 launcher, the Columbus Module of the International Space Station and the ATV, as well as number of smaller projects (most notably Phoenix).
Recently, EADS SPACE Transportation has started a campaign in favour of a project called LIFE, for astronomy from the Moon surface.

Space researchers in Bremen came a step closer this weekend to the creation of Europe's first reusable, unmanned space shuttle.
Bremen-based EADS Space Transportation is developing the shuttle in the hopes that it will carry cargo and astronauts into space within the next 20 years.
The European Space Agency and EADS hope to complete development of Hopper between 2015 and 2020, when it would go into service as a replacement for the Ariane 5 rocket, the workhorse launcher currently used by the European space program to send satellites and other payloads into orbit.
