Gottfried Achenwall (1719 Elbing + 1772 Goettingen) became famous for his teachings in natural law and human rights law.
At the time of the First Partition of Poland in 1772, the city lost its privileges as city-state and was annexed to the Kingdom of Prussia, which in 1871 became a part of the German Empire.
After the German population has been expelled, the city was repopulated and the name changed back to Elblag.
