  Epstein-Barr Virus
Epstein-Barr virus, frequently referred to as EBV, is a member of the herpesvirus family and one of the most common human viruses.
EBV appears to play an important role in these malignancies, but is probably not the sole cause of disease.
Finally, even when EBV antibody tests, such as the early antigen test, suggest that reactivated infection is present, this result does not necessarily indicate that a patient's current medical condition is caused by EBV infection.

 Understanding EBV's
This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd.
For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter's milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200 and 400 day weights of her calves.
This EBV is an estimate of a sire's genetic merit for scrotal size and is positively correlated to age of puberty in female progeny.

eMedicine - Infectious Mononucleosis : Article by Burke A Cunha, MD, MACP
Pharyngitis observed in EBV infectious mononucleosis is caused by the proliferation of EBV-infected B lymphocytes in the lymphatic tissue of the oropharynx.
EBV infectious mononucleosis is characterized by early and transient bilateral upper lid edema.
Pharyngitis is one of the cardinal manifestations of EBV infectious mononucleosis.

txt001lyb: Epstein-Barr virus infection: basis of malignancy and potential for therapy
EBV is the causative agent of infectious mononucleosis and has been linked to the development of several malignant tumours, including B-cell neoplasms such as Burkitt’s lymphoma and Hodgkin’s disease, certain forms of T-cell lymphoma, and some epithelial tumours, such as undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma and a proportion of gastric cancers.
In addition, studies of EBV strains in donor–recipient pairs before and after bone marrow transplantation (BMT) have shown that the recipient’s strain disappeared from the oropharynx and was replaced by the donor’s strain, indicating that the bone-marrow B cells harbour EBV (Ref. 11).

Infection with EBV is characterized by fatigue and general malaise.
EBV was at one time believed to be the cause of the chronic fatigue syndrome, but chronic infection with this virus actually produces a separate (if similar) disorder.

 EBV and Cellular Immune Deficiencies
The elevated EBV titers found in these patients may be due to defective immune response to viral antigens and, therefore, secondary to the illness and not indicative of its cause.
Furthermore, IgG antibodies to EB-VCA and early antigen are elevated during the course of CFS, implicating EBV as a cause of this illness (Buchwald et al., 1987; Holmes et al., 1987; Merlin, 1986).
The increased EBV activity as evidenced by increased antibodies to the virus will most likely be non-pathologic and may be used as a marker to indicate the presence of defective cellular immunity.

 EBV-Immunology
The major antigens of EBV include six EBV-associated nuclear antigens (EBNA, 1,2,3a,3b,3c,-leader protein (LP)), early antigen (EA), which comes in diffuse (D) and restricted (R) forms, viral capsid antigen (VCA), EBV-induced membrane antigen (MA), and latent membrane proteins (LMP) (2).
EBNA 3A (136kD), 3B (142kD), and 3C (147kD) are involved in EBV transformation of primary human B lymphocytes (1).
EBV is also known to invade T-cells, altering T-cell proliferation and development.

Confusion regarding the association of EBV infection with infectious mononucleosis is not unusual.

Primary infection with EBV is associated with the appearance of nonspecific heterophile antibodies.

 CRC-Vaccine Technology Epstein-Barr Virus - Kiss this Disease Good-bye
EBV is one of the herpes virus group, sharing the ability to remain latent or dormant within the body and reactivate when the immune system is compromised or suppressed.
In industrialised nations, EBV causes a debilitating but relatively harmless infection; a bout of glandular fever is almost expected in adolescents, with the effect of disruption to studies for months.
EBV is spread mainly through the transfer of saliva between individuals, hence the name the 'kissing disease'.

 Infectious Mononucleosis (EBV)
EBV infects the B cells in the oropharyngeal epithelium.
During acute EBV disease, lymphocyte numbers elevate to 50-60% of the total leukocytes in the peripheral blood (a count of 20,000-50,000), of which 10% are atypical lymphocytes (95 percent are T-lymphocytes the rest are B-lymphocytes), or Downey cells.
The EBV heterophile antibody titers are highest during the first four weeks of disease, and can be demonstrated after the first week in some patients, while not until the 3rd or 4th week in others.

Burkitt's lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, monocytic leukemia, and histiocytic lymphoma are associated with the presence of EBV DNA (9).

 ATYPICAL MOSQUITO BITE REACTIONS
Nonetheless, the associations among severe mosquito bite reactions, chronic-active EBV infection and unpleasant sequelae are well documented (eg, 3- 4,7-8); thus the presence of a chronic, active EBV infection is potentially important, and severe mosquito bite reactions may be an early symptom.
Kids or adults with chronic, atypical EBV presence may develop skin symptoms resembling bulla (eg, like a small blister filled with fluid) and labeled with such fancy medical monikers as "facial vesiculopapular eruptions mimicking hydroa vacciniforme" or "Hypersensitivity to mosquito bites was noted in a patient with hydroa vacciniforme-like eruptions" (4-5).
No evidence of EBV infection was apparent in 19 patients with mycosis fungoides or Sezary syndrome, 7 with adult T-cell leukemia or lymphoma, 3 with lymphomatoid papulosis (type A), and 2 with lymphocytoma cutis.

EBV virions produced in different cell lines differ in their capacity to induce apoptosis in developing DCs.

Pro-apoptotic activity of EBV virions was assessed by Annexin V staining on day 5 of culture (a, b) and their capacity to enter monocytes was evaluated by monitoring GFP expression, either in total cell lysates by immunoblotting with GFP-specific antibodies (c, d) or by direct measurement of GFP-dependent fluorescence (e, f).

EBV is but one of the thousand names for mycoplasmic wasting disease illnesses--nearly perfect in design as "stealth" weapons.
As I said, most of the time with EBV, we only experience a mild case of cold or flu-like symptoms once infected, and, if our immune systems are working properly--although we keep this virus for a lifetime, like chicken pox or mumps usually remains in check via a healthy immune system.
