This was also Hancock's last gig as Davis's pianist, as he left afterwards for a honeymoon in Brazil and was replaced by Chick Corea when he couldn't return for an engagement due to illness.
Holland's first recordings with Davis were in September 1968, for half of the album Filles de Kilimanjaro (with Davis, Corea, Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams).
All three of his studio recordings with Davis were instrumental in the evolution of jazz fusion.

Most of his major work came out on ECM, aside from one stint in pop music-- a few appearances with Kate Bush, who used Weber's distinct tone most notably on "Houdini." Nowadays, he tours with Jan Garbarek's group and has only cut two albums of his own in the last decade, most recently in 2001.
One of ECM's earliest classics, Chloe still sounds unprecedented; the only albums I could compare it to are some of the dreamier fusion and prog music of the time from maybe Soft Machine, and its most childlike moments might appeal to fans of Boards of Canada.
ECM has been typecast as gorgeous but complacent, and it's sometimes called the father of new age because it let slip all the tension and conflict that new age dispensed with entirely.

ECM was my favourite record label in the 1970s, and Pat Metheny my favourite artist on that label (until his shock departure to Geffen), so this greatest-hits compilation is an important album for me, particularly as Pat selected the tracks himself.
I've owned his ECM records for many a year -- some in both LP and CD formats -- so I wasn't expecting anything more than a new, remastered light to be shone on old treasures.
Guitarist Pat Metheny's compilation for ECM Records "Rarum: Selected Recordings" series is an exquisite collection of his first ten years as a solo artist (1975-1985).

ECM, an acronym that stands for "Edition of Contemporary Music", is the intellectual baby of Manfred Eicher (born in 1943), who formed the label in Munich way back in 1969.

A beautiful recording based on research of Professor Helga Thoene which theorizes that verses of hidden chorales exist in the Ciaccona from Partita BWV 1004.
This recording by Poppen and Hilliard alternates between solo violin and the chorales and ends with a beautiful performance of the Ciaccona on violin accompanied by the voices singing the chorale melodies.
However, this is not the first recording based on the theory: the 1998 Glossa release "De Occulta Philosophia" by Jose Miguel Moreno (lute) and Emma Kirkby (soprano) & Carlos Mena (countertenor) takes a different, but also lovely, approach.

Charles Lloyd has made seven recordings for ECM since 1989, and they constitute one of the abiding bodies of work in late-20th-century jazz.
It is surprising that the two most recent of these recordings, Voice in the Night (1999) and now The Water is Wide, are the strongest of the seven, and yet each introduces new personnel.
It is surprising because the quartet that made the first five ECM albums, featuring the great Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson and drummer Billy Hart, was one of the finest small jazz ensembles of its era, and its achievements were collective.

If primitive man had invented the electric guitar and multi-track recording before the wheel, he might have made an album much like this one.
The album is vividly articulate in its evocation of natural phenomena and spiritual aura (the bull elephant roar of Tibbetts' screaming fuzz guitar; the eerie mix of gentle acoustic plucking, a galloping tabla drum and a strangely treated tape of Nepalese monks chanting in the distance on "Another Year").

This recording offers the more clear, open-voiced Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir in a kind of survey that describes the style of Orthodox music, but also places it in context, both regarding its baroque Italian influences and in terms of its traditional place in the church service.
The sound, recorded in a Tallinn church, takes on a bit of a glare in louder sections, especially where sopranos are in higher registers; otherwise, it's just about perfect.

Aside from his work with Glass Harp, the Phil Keaggy recordings most of most interest to progressive rockers are his instrumental albums: The Master and the Musician (1978, which features an appearance by Yezda Urfa's Phil Kimbrough); The Wind and the Wheat (1987), and 220 (1996).
Recorded during various live dates in their native Finland, it's even darker than their debut (if you can imagine that), and has an "evil" vibe that can rival the most Satan-loving fl metal band.
