Pat Metheny Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pat Metheny Group is a jazz fusion band founded in 1977.
The core members of the group are guitarist and bandleader Pat Metheny, composer, keyboardist and pianist Lyle Mays (who was part of the group's inception in 1977), and bassist and producer Steve Rodby (joined in 1980).
First Circle would also be Metheny's last project with the ECM label; Metheny had been a key artist for ECM but left over conceptual disagreements with label founder Manfred Eicher.

 Chapter 11 COUNTERMEASURES
The basic purpose of ECM is to interfere with the operation of the sensors of the air/surface defense system, and through them to interfere with the operation of the system itself.
In order to be effective, the ECM transmitter must be capable of emitting enough power in the bandwidth of the victim receiver to mask (jam) its intended signal or to simulate a deceptive signal realistically.
Noise or a sample of the victim radar pulse is amplified and retransmitted from various widely separated points on the ECM unit (or several closely spaced cooperating units) in a random fashion, causing enhancement of the usual movement (wander) of the point on the ECM unit that the radar tracks.

Pianist Chick Corea also left the Miles Davis band in the late 1960s to found a free jazz quartet called Circle but then switched back to a romantic jazz feel in 1971 with his jazz rock group Return to Forever (Romantic Warrior, 1976) which combined electro-acoustic timbres with lush harmonies and vocal lines.
In 1986 Corea formed his Elektrik Band, one of the top fusion groups of the 80s, and his Akoustik Band, a trio that performed jazz standards in 1989.
I and II (1983, ECM), Standards Live (1985, ECM), Tokyo 96 (1996, ECM) and the exceptional Inside Out (2000, ECM) which is all spontaneously played except for an encore and draws on the trio's vast memory of jazz, blues, and rhythm 'n' blues.

It also fused jazz with itself; that is to say, the band combined elements of jazz history and pre-history — for instance, music from the sanctified church services, minstrel shows, and bawdy houses of late 19th and early 20th century America — with a modernist spirit of experimentation.
The band won a series of critic's polls and was considered by many to be the finest jazz ensemble in the world.
Bowie was stricken with liver cancer; for the band's June 1999 concert at the Boston Globe Jazz and Blues Festival, he was replaced by saxophonist Ari Brown.

Splendid Magazine reviews Dave Holland Big Band: What Goes Around
The secret to this may lie in the fact that the core of the Dave Holland Big Band are the members of his regular group, the Dave Holland Quintet -- saxophonist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibraphonist Steve Nelson and drummer Billy Kilson.
By building the band outward from the nucleus of this small group, Holland has maintained his Quintet's sensibilities, highlighting interplay and contrapuntal variety instead of massed textures.
In addition, his presence as the principal comping (chordal) instrument in the band (since that there is no pianist or guitarist) gives the proceedings a kind of shimmering feel that only the vibraphone can impart.

His bold, highly personal, and decidely weird style - displayed on his two solo ECM solo albums and on his recordings with the Everyman Band and saxophonist Jan Garbarek - place him in the pack of post-fusion thinkers bridging the seminal jazz-rockers to a bright future in expansive guitar concepts.
Armed with his array of electronic regalia, he is a one-man band, setting up swirling delay loops while inventing and layering ideas on the spot.

Once the FT receives the signal, it is translated into one of two narrow frequency bands to allow other ULQ-21 units (i.e., RT and MM) to receive the signal and operate in their existing frequency bands.
The generator can operate in frequency bands from 1 to 18 GHz; the frequency band is determined by the voltage controlled oscillator installed.
Installed in the WCO, the TVCO is used in producing sophisticated ECM noise techniques in a frequency range of 850 MHz to 18 GHz in 5 bands.

Active, most likely deceptive ECM would be employed for penetrating heavily defended zones, this would be employed if hostile radar were to lock on, at close range, during the terminal strike manoeuvre.

Ironically, Jazz's pantheon of Big Band impresarios is also the source of some of the genre's most singular, individualistic characters.
Dressed casually in a red t-shirt and gray slacks, Holland thumped away and, with eyes closed and a mild grin on his face, guided the band and the audience through a few gratifying variations of jazz big band—from the traditional dueling brass and woodwind sections to a more collective free-blowing and experimental approach.
The big band format has also afforded Holland a significant opportunity to elevate his considerable arranging skills, something that is often taken for granted when smaller groups take the stage or show up for a recording date.

Dave Holland Big Band :What Goes Around
On the other hand, a commanding big band demands excellent soloists and players with unique voices that can be used to advantage within the structure of arrangements and compositions.
Creating big band arrangements from previous compositions is a good idea—it allows Holland perspective on which compositions would best make the transition from small to large group and it allows him to reimagine the compositions and devote his attention to the arrangements.
Given Holland’s work for ECM and his demonstrated ability to play “out”, some may consider the big band work to be somewhat conservative, but ultimately Holland is able to walk the line between the demand for a modern sound and the traditions of the format quite admirably.
