EDACS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
EDACS stands for The Enhanced Digital Access Communication System, a radio communications protocol and product family invented in the General Electric Corporation in the mid 1980s.
The EDACS system continues to be sold, and supports a sizable portion of the market today for the public safety, public transit, and industrial two-way radio communications field.
EDACS was developed in competition with Motorola's Smartnet trunking system.

EDACS (Enhanced Digital Access Communications System) is a high-performance, feature rich, group-oriented critical radio communications system available in VHF, UHF, 800 and 900 MHz frequency bands.
With its unique architecture that ensures continued uninterrupted operation, EDACS is recognized as a reliable, fault tolerant, trunked two-way radio communications system.
To provide flexible and efficient wide-area network operations, EDACS is offered in multisite, simulcast, and combined configurations, and is also capable of carrying voice and data on a single system.

Jim Robbins: Radio: South Brunswick's Trunked Radio System
EDACS has the "GE Jingle." After most transmissions, the repeater broadcasts a series of 5 beeps of constant pitch and frequency (a few systems reportedly mimic the "We Bring Good Things to Life" (registered, GE Corp) jingle).
The most-hated distinguishing characteristic of EDACS is the anti-scanner (or scan defeat) tone.
It is believed that EDACS trunked radios open the squelch completely to receive the control channel, but require a signal to break the squelch threshold to receive regular communications.

 Ericsson's EDACS Trunking
EDACS operates in VHF, UHF, 800, and 900 MHz bands, and is used by private businesses as well as public safety organizations.
EDACS uses 11 binary digits (bits) to identify a talkgroup.
Each EDACS system may divide these bits up differently, but the most common arrangement for public safety agencies is four bits for the Agency, four bits for the Fleet, and the remaining three bits for Subfleet.

 Trunking the EDACS way
Working channel/control channel In an EDACS system, the channel assigned to handle the unit-to-unit traffic is referred to as a working channel.
EDACS, however, is able to route "late arrivals" to the proper working channel because the supervisory data on the outbound control channel is repeated continuously.
Under certain conditions, however (such as an important dispatch or emergency call), it may be desirable to dedicate a channel to a particular group for a short period of time.

 ETRUNK Documentation
Because EDACS system IDs are limited in size and not necessarily unique in an area, it may be necessary to run ETRUNK from a different directory for each system you monitor.
Because EDACS systems do not utilize standard bandplans, it will be necessary to manually identify all frequencies associated with the EDACS system and update ETRUNK's data files with the LCN to Frequency mapping.
Since these identifiers may not be unique within a geographical area, it may be necessary to keep a working directory for each unique EDACS system you monitor, and it will probably not be practical to jump from one system to the next without stopping Etrunk.

The preliminary Operator's Manual that was submitted to the FCC only describes EDACS systems in non-specific terms.
In fact it states that, "EDACS systems are used primarily by business or private communications service providers," indicating that the PRO-96 manufacturer believes there is less demand for EDACS monitoring than Motorola monitoring.
Since the manual doesn't specify 'narrowband EDACS' it is unlikely that this type of system will be supported.
