  EDCs
The acronym EDCs stands for Endocrine Disrupting Substances.
EDCs refer to some chemicals, both natural and man-made, which can interfere with the endocrine system, its hormones or where the hormones act.
In many cases, it is not yet clear exactly how EDCs act, even in some cases where a link has been shown between EDC exposure and an adverse effect.

UK NEEDS TO BE VIGILANT ON GENDER   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), sometimes called gender benders have caused concern amongst the public as they may interfere with the normal function of the hormonal systems of humans and animals.
EDCs are also linked to a range of effects in humans and animals, from falling sperm counts and increases in testicular cancer, to feminisation of fish.
Also, reports of intersex (having the characteristics of both sexes) fish in the UK led to the discovery that a combination of natural EDCs already in the environment and excreted EDCs (due to the contraceptive pill) were causing the serious effect.

Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) Royal Society UK Jun00
With regard to EDCs in the environment, firm assessment of the risk to humans is not possible because of a lack of relevant data about the effects of EDC exposure.
EDCs are substances which may interfere with normal function of the endocrine (hormone) system of humans and animals, since many of them mimic the structure of natural hormones produced in the body e.g.
Assessment of the risk to man from EDCs is based on studies in experimental animals coupled with measurement of the hormonal potency of the chemicals of concern (hazard assessment) and, in limited cases, knowledge of the level of exposure of humans to the chemical in question.

The EDCS program is a new program that began in late 1995 with a Broad Area Announcement (BAA) resulting about fifty contract and grant awards, the first beginning in May 1996 and most awarded by the start of 1997.
EDCS investigates ways to create software that is more easily evolved and to transform current legacy systems into evolutionary systems.
Collaboration in the EDCS program was natural for Rome Laboratory because of its previous research and development experience in both conventional and knowledge-based software engineering.

This is also a situation where an EDCS Profile could be used to specify the restrictions on Brush Density values and ensure use of this attribute to be more applicable to and appropriate for the specific problem at hand.
Similarity of labels (and ITD names) alone is clearly an insufficient basis for the mapping decisions, as illustrated in using the EDCS classification “Forest” to represent the ITD semantic of “Trees”, despite the presence of the EDCS classification “Tree.” The definitions are also vital during the process of deciding on appropriate attribute entries.
Summary The EDCS is a developing international standard dedicated to implementing a set of labels and codes for complete and consistent specification and description of all environmental data.

Problems with toxics: EDC's   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) are synthetic chemicals that interfere with naturally produced hormones, the body's chemical messengers, that control how an organism develops and functions.
Some EDCs are persistent in the environment and bioaccumulate; they accumulate in the fatty tissue of organisms and increase in concentration as they move up through the food web.
Wildlife and humans are exposed daily to these pervasive chemicals that have already caused numerous adverse effects in wildlife and are most likely affecting humans as well.

The team examined whether EDCs that can bind to vertebrate estrogen receptors and interfere with normal hormone action would also influence luteolin--NodD receptor signaling.
After comparing the amino acid sequences of NodD and estrogen receptors and the nucleotide sequences of their genes, the team did not find the two proteins to be similar.
Fox and colleagues conclude that EDCs do affect luteolin--NodD receptor signaling, which implies that the effects of these chemicals are not confined to vertebrates expressing estrogen receptors.

These are important issues to resolve because of the presence of low levels of EDCs in the environment.
Moreover, in many cases where wildlife has been affected, it is still not known how the EDC is working to bring about these effects.
However, the fact that high levels of chemicals can impair human health through interferences with the endocrine system, raises concerns about the possible harmful effects of mixtures of so called endocrine disrupting chemicals, even at low background-levels.
