Eating disorder not otherwise specified - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) is a diagnostic category of mental disorders that involve disordered eating patterns.
EDNOS is described in the DSM-IV-TR, the latest version of the diagnostic manual of the American Psychiatric Association, as a "category [of] disorders of eating that do not meet the criteria for any specific Eating Disorder".
EDNOS is a serious eating disorder, like anorexia and bulimia, and can have long-term consequences on the individual's physical health.

EDNOS, or (E)ating (D)isorder (N)ot (O)therwise (S)pecified, is an official diagnosis in the DSM-IV.
EDNOS, while it may not be as well known as other eating disorders, is just as dangerous, and poses the same amount, if not more, health risks.
EDNOS may develop from a specific eating disorder, such as one of the previously mentioned.

EDNOS covers those who fail to meet all guidelines for eating disorders, which means that they may not qualify for coverage for their illness.
A person with EDNOS who binges and purges once a week technically has an EDNOS, because the guidelines say the individual should binge and purge at least twice a week to be considered bulimic.
The only difference is that EDNOS sufferers may not qualify for insurance coverage, because they fail to meet the guidelines for eating disorders.

Binge eating disorder; recurrent episodes of binge eating in the absence of the regular use of inappropriate compensatory behaviors characteristic of bulimia nervosa.
Thus it is important to be aware of the ways in which an individual feels about food, so that the seriousness of their issues are clear, in order for that individual to begin making intentional steps toward the healthy end of the continuum.

Clinicians diagnose 60 percent of all eating disorder cases as EDNOS, compared with 25 percent for bulimia and 15 percent for anorexia, according to a recent article in the academic journal Behavior Research and Therapy.
Examples of people diagnosed with EDNOS include women who exhibit all the symptoms of anorexia but still have regular menstrual periods, or people with symptoms of bulimia who binge and purge less than twice a week.
More commonly found among EDNOS patients, according to the journal article, are people who exhibit symptoms of both anorexia and bulimia.

According to Mickley, some conditions that are currently lumped within NOS may eventually be accorded their own specific diagnoses (binge-eating disorder, for instance, will be accorded a separate diagnosis in the next DSM, which will appear in 2012).
Some eating disorders specialists, meanwhile, do not see the EDNOS classification as a problem within their practices because therapy is covered by insurance and each course of treatment is highly individualized regardless of diagnosis.
A breaking down of EDNOS could also help elucidate for the public what is now a murky topic.

Three groups of eating disorder patients (anorexia nervosa, n=27; bulimia nervosa, n=23; EDNOS, n=19) and a group of non-eating-disorder controls (n=25) were compared on four subscales of the Eating Disorders Inventory - 2 (EDI-2), and on the Eating Disorders Belief Questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales.
EDNOS patients were indistinguishable from the other two eating disorder groups on all of the measured variables, except for the Perfectionism subscale of the EDI-2.
The findings of the present study support the view that EDNOS should not be considered a subclinical eating disorder.

There are numerous variants of disordered eating in addition to binge eating disorder that do not meet the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, but nevertheless are eating disorders requiring treatment.
Individuals with eating disordered behaviors that resemble anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa but whose eating behaviors do not meet one or more essential diagnostic criteria may be diagnosed with EDNOS.
Examples of EDNOS include individuals who regularly purge but do not binge eat, individuals who meet criteria for anorexia nervosa but continue to menstruate, and individuals who meet criteria for bulimia nervosa, but binge eat less than twice weekly.

A third category for eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS) was created in an effort to expand treatment access for patients at high risk for an eating disorder (Papanck 2003).
Even with the addition of the EDNOS category, female athletes with the triad display a wide range of food-related pathologies.
Therefore, the term "eating disorder" was found to be too restrictive and replaced by "disordered eating" to include the various forms of aberrant eating behaviors that disrupt caloric balance (Papanek 2003).

She said the mixed eating disorder label "may have the benefit of eliminating the false impression that Ednos is somehow less severe or less clinically significant than so-called full-threshold eating disorders." But she expressed concern that the term would limit the enthusiasm for teasing out what other identifiable conditions lie within the Ednos category.

 Disordered Eating Past And Present
The DSM-IV places the atypical eating disorders into a category commonly referred to as EDNOS, which stands for "Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified." In this category are syndromes that resemble anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa but fall short of an essential feature or are not of the required severity, thus precluding either diagnosis.
The diagnosis of EDNOS is used for chronic dieters who purge what is considered by them to be "fattening" foods, even though they seldom or never binge and do not restrict their eating to the point of severe weight loss.
EDNOS includes: anorexics with menses; anorexics who despite significant weight loss are in the normal weight range; bulimics who don't meet the frequency or duration requirement for symptoms; purgers who don't binge; individuals who chew and spit out food; and those with binge eating disorder.

According to the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), there is a classification of disordered eating that falls between Anorexia, Binge Eating and Bulimia, referred to as “EDNOS”, or “Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified.” These are also sometimes referred to as 'sub-clinical' or 'sub-threshold' disorders.
If you think about it, many of the people you know actually fall into this category, as we know that for every (1) healthy eater, there are at least (2) people who fall into the EDNOS category.
In the middle are those struggling with EDNOS.
