Random access memory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RAM is typically used for primary storage (main memory) in computers to hold actively used and actively changing information, although some devices use certain types of RAM to provide long-term secondary storage.
One defining characteristic of RAM is that its accesses to different memory locations are almost always completed at about the same speed, in contrast to some other technologies that required a certain delay time for a bit or byte to “come around”.
Modern RAM generally stores a bit of data as either a charge in a capacitor, as in dynamic RAM, or the state of a flip-flop, as in static RAM.

EDO extends the time that output data is valid, which betters timing issues between the CPU and RAM and this way improves the performance.
EDO RAM was usually sold in 60 ns versions.
RAM is controlled by the chip set on the motherboard, so you must install a type, which matches your motherboard.

Fast Guide to RAM - a Whatis.com definition
RAM (random access memory) is the place in a computer where the operating system, application programs, and data in current use are kept so that they can be quickly reached by the computer's processor.
RAM is small, both in physical size (it's stored in microchip modules) and in the amount of data it can hold.
Depending on the type of RAM, the entire line of data may be read that the specific address happens to be located at or, in some RAM types, a unit of data called a page is read.

EDO chips allow the CPU to access memory 10 to 15 percent faster.
EDO modules should be used in systems designed to take advantage of EDO memory.
Use of EDO RAM in a computer that is not designed to take advantage of it can cause problems.

EDO RAM takes one processor wait state, which led some publications to claim it was fifty percent faster than FPM-DRAM.
Because the RAM does not have to send its information to an external SRAM cache, overall system performance is improved considerably.
Aside from variations of FPM-DRAM and EDO RAM, there are three other memory types you may find on a graphics controller.

While RAM can be used for all sorts of things (as you’re about to discover), DRAM refers specifically to your computer’s main memory.
EDO RAM is a little different from older types of DRAM because it has some smarts built in.
When the CPU requests information from EDO RAM, the EDO RAM assumes that the next information requested is going to be right next to the information that was just requested.

The problem with EDO RAM when looking in the future is that it hardly works with any bus speed higher than 66 MHz, which is already reached.
EDO (Extended Data Output) is the newest DRAM chip technology in a series of innovations which include "nibble mode", "write per bit" and "fast page mode".
EDO is a bit better than "fast page mode": for a given speed on the chip (for instance 70ns, 60ns) the EDO chip processor allows a 10 - 15 % faster access to the memory than with an "fast mode chip".

 Extended Data Out (EDO) DRAM
EDO DRAM is the same as standard FPM DRAM except for a slight modification in the access cycle that gives it a small performance boost.
With EDO DRAM, one read to memory can begin before the last one has completely finished; this yields a raw speed improvement of between 5 and 20 percent, depending on whom you ask.
EDO is still, however, a low-cost and low-performance solution compared to other types of video memory, and is not used on high-end cards.

EDO has been popular ever since it was first introduced, mainly because of its superb performance and relatively low cost however its compatibility with nearly every system made it a very popular choice among new system builders.

EDO RAM was initially optimized for the 66 MHz Pentium.
For faster computers, different types of synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM) are recommended.

A memory cache, sometimes called a cache store or RAM cache, is a portion of memory made of high-speed static RAM (SRAM) instead of the slower and cheaper dynamic RAM (DRAM) used for main memory.
For synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM) chips, which have a 64 data bit connection to the computer, SIMMs must be installed in in-line pairs (since each supports a 32 bit path).
On the other hand, flash memory is not useful as random access memory (RAM) because RAM needs to be addressable at the byte (not the block) level.

Dizk, it's physically impossible to insert EDO RAM in a SDRAM slot, because SIMMs (EDO) and DIMMs (SDRAM) have a different length and number of "pins".
Furthermore, EDO is always placed two SIMMs at a time in a bank (two slots).
