Topic: EDSA II

Epifanio de los Santos Avenue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
EDSA is a partially controlled access, 10-lane divided highway (expressway) with many interchanges along its length that eliminate the need for traffic lights, but with a few traffic lights where there is insufficient space or funds for a complete interchange.
EDSA forms a major portion of one of the circumferential roads in Metro Manila, C-4.
EDSA also figures prominently in the recent history of the Philippines for being the site of two peaceful demonstrations that toppled the administration of two presidents, Ferdinand Marcos and Joseph Estrada (See EDSA Revolution and EDSA II.

2001 EDSA Revolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 2001 EDSA Revolution, also called by the local media as EDSA II (pronounced as Edsa dos) or the Second People Power Revolution, is the common name of the four-day popular revolution that peacefully overthrew Philippine president Joseph Estrada in January 2001.
EDSA is an acronym derived from Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, the major highway that encircles Metro Manila.
This further fueled the growing anti-ERAP sentiments of the crowd gathered at EDSA Shrine, and she became the most vilified and accursed of the 11 senators.

Lessons and prospects for the Philippine left   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The bulk of the Edsa II participants were students (many from working-class families), while the bulk of the Edsa III participants were from the urban poor, the unemployed and the marginalised sectors of society—the poorest of the poor, or the "basement poor" according to some quarters.
Edsa III should be read as a signal of the gathering disenchantment and disgust of the poor over their miserable situation rather than a mere demand for the reinstatement of an ousted president.
During Edsa II, the CPP organisations were part of the "civil society" (a term now used by Philippine NGOs and social democratic groups to denote the participants of Edsa II) that initiated the mobilisation, but there was nothing revolutionary in their uncritical endorsement of GMA as a replacement for the Estrada regime.

EDSA I retains a certain magic because it signaled, after all, a democratic transition not only in the nation, but also in other nations as well with repressive regimes (remember that EDSA I unleashed the pro-democracy tide that swept South Korea, Poland, Pakistan and the rest of the world).
EDSA II toppled a corrupt president who, however, was a darling of the illiterate masses.
The debasement is evident in the aftermath of EDSA II.

Edsa I and Edsa II Comparison
In EDSA II, the people protested the pro-Estrada senators' barring of a set of evidences that will convict the president in the on-going impeachment trial.
This is what the people claimed as "suppression of truth." People of EDSA II have lost faith on the integrity of the impeachment court and are predicting an acquittal verdict by a majority of the senators.
EDSA I was more of a solemn crusade, while EDSA II was more like a party.

In the Philippines, EDSA is a shortened name for Efipanio de los Santos Avenue where a massive public demonstration joined by military rebels known as EDSA I was held ending the dictatorship of President Ferdinand E. Marcos in February 1986.
It was for this reason that the original plan for the alleged February 24, 2006 Malacanang takeover by the military and the EDSA marching mob, was reported to have been previously revealed by the coup plotters to their highest military “superior’ hoping to gain the required endorsement.

 1986 EDSA Revolution Summary
Also known as the EDSA Revolution, the uprising was in reaction to the massive fraud and violence unleashed by the government to ensure that Marcos and vice presidential candidate Arturo Tolentino would win the so-called snap elections that Marcos had called earlier that month.
While the EDSA Revolution is almost universally acknowledged as a great example of democracy at work, many political scientists and sociologists have commented that the Philippines has largely failed to actualize the possible gains from a fresh change in government, including the new constitution.
EDSA II resulted in the downfall of Estrada's administration, the extreme polarization of Philippine society, and the dilution of the concept of "People Power".

However, the Edsa Insurrection of 1986 (Edsa is the name of the most important avenue of Metro Manila) saw the CPP, its 25,000 strong guerrilla army, the NPA, and its 500,000 strong union, the KMU standing to one side and just watching the events without intervening.

I hope PGMA is not thinking of using the LNMB and the departed heroes of the AFP and the PNP buried there as a mere prop or lame excuse to prove her commitment to the Spirit of EDSA.
If some cynics and skeptics claim that the Spirit of EDSA is now dead or dying, that belief is possibly being reinforced by the casual and off-hand manner which has characterized Government’s treatment of the 20th Anniversary.
Turning our backs against the Spirit of EDSA and to blame it for our country’s ills today would be tantamount to debasing the Spirit of 1896 ignited by the intellect of Jose Rizal, the valor of Andres Bonifacio, and the resoluteness of Emilio Aguinaldo.
