  EDTV vs HDTV
The bad news in relation to EDTV vs HDTV is that you need a completely new TV or projector to display both EDTV and HDTV.
Most DVD players on the market today are progressive scan, meaning they output EDTV signals, however, in order to view the progressive scan picture in all its glory, you need a TV or projector capable of displaying it and that, unfortunately, means getting a new TV.
So even if you live in a country or area where HDTV content is limited or non-existent, it is worth it to watch your DVD collection in EDTV, the difference between SDTV and EDTV really is that big.

  EDtv
Strangely, once EDtv goes on the air, it starts to catch on, slowly at first, but quickly building when a series of personal events unfold on the air.
As the EDtv show becomes more and more popular, details of the relationship between Ed's mom (Sally Kirkland), his step father (Martin Landau), and his real father (Dennis Hopper) begin to emerge, and Ed finds out that a number of things that he was told when his parents broke up weren't true.
Martin Landau is great as Ed's wheelchair-bound stepfather, and Sally Kirkland is hilarious as his mom, on the one hand dressed to the teeth when she knows she is going to be on camera, and on the other shocked, when details about her relationships with Ed's real father become public.

EDtv (the movie) risks tedium itelf by clocking in at over two hours, which is a bit too long, by industry standards, for a comedy.
EDtv is not as farfetched as it may have seemed when released.
Although the EDtv started out as wanting to capture the real moments in Ed's life, by the time two or three months have passed, Ed's life is no more real than those on "Survivor" or "Big Brother." Let's face it: how can one go about their normal life with microphones and cameras catching everything.

EDtv, for a film with such an impressive cast, caught me punching my fob not once, not twice, but five successive times.
Like last year's The Truman Show, to which EDtv is being unfairly compared (the two are miles apart in almost every aspect), Howard's film is champing at the bit to comment on our American culture of white trash insta-fame and Springeristic jingoisms.
What fails, if that's the correct word, is that EDtv doesn't gel into the punctilious war cry against mediocrity that it so rightly strives to be; instead, we're left with a pretty solid Ron Howard comedy of manners, which isn't bad at all.

When EDtv was being filmed, the Eventual DVD release was being thought up at the same time, so extra bits and pieces where being made up for it.
EDtv is quite an enjoyable film, with a fun attitude at hand, for the most part, and is not that bad as a Collector's Edition DVD either.

EDtv contains an "average" amount of obscenities and profanity, including the taking of our Lord's name in vain, but no use of the "f-word" occurs (although two characters do use the "middle-finger gesture").
There are also many crude references to genitals and sex, briefly depicted male masturbation scenes, an extended rear shot of a woman wearing only thong underwear, a quick glimpse of a woman's bare breast during a make-out scene in a car, and another sexually explicit make-out scene (both scenes are interrupted and do not resume).

 Salon Entertainment | EDtv
"EDtv," despite being adapted from a 1994 French film by Michel Poulette, is a fast and funny ensemble comedy in the brainless, painless American tradition, a fable about an ordinary guy who discovers that fame and fortune aren't all they're cracked up to be and that he's better off being himself.
DeGeneres' hidden strength as a performer is that we instinctively believe that someone whose company we enjoy so much must have a conscience, no matter how deeply buried, and this isn't the kind of movie to disappoint such expectations.
As a media satire, "EDtv" is genial and almost plausible, though it's hardly original at this late date to suggest that the public hunger for sex and sensation can be destructive, or that those who feed it indiscriminately may reap the whirlwind.
