  eDonkey - free eDonkey download
eDonkey network (also called eDonkey2000 network or ed2k) is a file sharing network used primarily to exchange music, films and software.
Like most file sharing networks, it is decentralized; files are not stored on a central server but are exchanged directly between users based on the peer to peer principle.
On September 28th 2005 the main developer of the eDonkey client, Sam Yagan, gave in to the demands of the RIAA to immediately ensure that users of their client are not able to download copyright protected content any more.

Another feature of eDonkey is that it shares file segments before the download completes, this speeds up file distribution throughout the network.
The inventor of eDonkey invented another file-sharing network called Overnet[?], which interoperates with the eDonkey network, but without the use of any servers.

AP Wire | 09/12/2006 | Firm behind eDonkey to pay $30 million to avoid piracy claims
The eDonkey Web site on Tuesday featured a message from the company telling visitors that the eDonkey2000 Network was no longer available, and a warning that people who steal music or movies are breaking the law.
EDonkey has been the most popular file-sharing network the last two years, but most of the computer users tapping into the hub of linked PCs have increasingly done so using an open-source version of the eDonkey software dubbed eMule, said Eric Garland, chief executive at BigChampagne Online Media Measurement, which tracks online entertainment.
Because many computer users still have functional versions of eDonkey or eMule, it's unlikely the shutdown of eDonkey's business operations will have much of an impact on people file-swapping on the eDonkey network, Garland said.

In order to connect to users in a specific network, you need to use a program called a client, that is designed to work on that specific network.
Or, rather: when you connect to the ed2k network, you connect to one out of many servers, that all take care of a number of connections, and “talk” to each other so that all the users can download from and upload to each other.
The ed2k network is known to be relatively slow.

The backbone of the eDonkey network is a group of servers disseminated around the world that are running a software called Lugdunum.
For most people the solution is to simply upgrade to the latest version of the client they use, but for Windows 95 users, this is a problem since the latest version of their client simply will not run on their system.

Most of the clients out there have released a version or several (in some cases including the current version) that was severely detrimental to the network, usually in terms of increased serverload, or overly frequent communications with fellow clients.
Though i believe back when eDonkey was still young, some serious communications did take place between the development team and other parties as to its inner workings, this teamwork lead to several of the tools out there today, many of which were open source, which is doubtlessly of use to current programmers.
This new GUI is being programmed for BOTH eDonkey and Overnet, while preliminary testing will occur exclusively in Overnet, and likely the first few public releases as well, it will be attached the the eDonkey core once the bugs are ironed out.

The advantage was that, as could be seen with the famous Audiogalaxy network, the server could be employed to maintain a global list of files available on the network at any current time.
Still based on servers, second-generation networks do away with the centralized server; instead, client software can either have dual functions as server and client or special server software is available to run parallel to a client.
Designed as the successor to the eDonkey network, the 3rd-generation Overnet protocol was state-of-the-art when it first appeared, but is being superceded by newer implementations of the Kademlia algorithm.
