Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
EEE is maintained in a transmission cycle involving Culiseta melanura mosquitoes (1 of 50 mosquito species in Minnesota) and birds.
Fortunately EEE is a rare illness in humans, and only a few cases are reported in the United States each year.
EEE is typically found in the eastern United States (as far west as Michigan), and in the south along the Gulf Coast.

CDC Fact Sheet: Eastern Equine Encephalitis - CDC Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases (DVBID)
EEE virus (EEEV) occurs in the eastern half of the United States where it causes disease in humans, horses, and some bird species.
Because of the high mortality rate, EEE is regarded as one of the most serious mosquito-borne diseases in the United States.
National human EEE case report data for 1964-2004 are posted on this website, by state, as is a map of reported human cases from 1964-2004.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis ( EEE )
Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is also caused by a virus transmitted to humans and equines by the bite of an infected mosquito.
EEE virus is an alphavirus that was first identified in the 1930's and currently occurs in focal locations along the eastern seaboard, the Gulf Coast and some inland Midwestern locations of the United States.
When health officials maintain surveillance for EEE virus activity, this movement out of the swamp can be detected, and if the level of activity is sufficiently high, can recommend and undertake measures to reduce the risk to humans.

Because outbreaks of EEE are infrequent, the disease has a significant economic and social impact once a specific area has been identified.
The virus that causes EEE is transmitted primarily by mosquitoes that bite an infected animal and then bite and feed on another animal or human.
EEE probably will never be eradicated from the United States because of the reservoirs that exist in so many areas throughout the country.

The lack of verified human cases of EEE in Connecticut is not entirely understood, since human cases have repeatedly been documented in neighboring Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
EEE is spread by mosquitoes; the transfer of the virus to a mammal can only be effected by a ‘cross bite’ scenario.
At present, EEE does not appear to be a major health risk to the general public of Connecticut.

EEE can cause severe illness in any age group, however, people under age 15 are at particular risk.
However, because positive EEE mosquito pools have been found in human biting mosquitoes and infection of a horse in the same area has been identified, there is a higher risk of human cases.
This is an unusual finding, as the occurrence of EEE in mammal-biters is rare and tends to occur later in the season.

Public Works   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The best system to monitor for EEE is to: 1) monitor the population levels of the important mosquitoes, C. melanura, cokes, and man-biting Aedes, 2) test these same species for virus, 3) test native song birds for antibodies to EEE virus, and 4) establish a system to rapidly detect horse cases near the swamps.
Since EEE activity in a county during any given year can be limited to a single swamp among many, it is necessary to monitor these factors in all C. melanura breeding swamps.
Aborting the threat of an EEE outbreak, or an outbreak itself, is most easily done by an aerial application of insecticide to kill adult C. melanura, cokes, and man-biting Aedes.

Knowing this, one might ask how many people are effected by Arbo-virus, not just EEE or West Nile, as some fatal cases are never given those diagnoses.
