 Republic F-105 Thunderchief
When the Thunderchief was in flying condition, it was an impressive aircraft, like its Republic ancestors big, rugged, and powerful, but unlike them surprisingly sleek and photogenic.
Six months after the introduction of the Thunderchief to Southeast Asia, the 36th TFS was relocated to another base in Thailand at Takhli, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) to the northwest.
Thunderchiefs began to be transferred from USAF service to the Air Force Reserve and US Air National Guard in January 1971, with the last Thunderchiefs, F-105Gs, in USAF service sent to the Reserves in July 1980.

Thunderchiefs would cross the Thud Ridge, 21°16′47″N, 105°49′37″E – a mountain ridge in the Red River valley north of Hanoi – and approach their targets from the northwest at high speed and low altitude.
With high wing loading, the Thunderchief was by all acounts an excellent aircraft to fly at high speeds.
Loss of control due to a spin or complications of adverse yaw required deliberate effort from the pilot and spontaneous spin recovery was rapid.

The "Thud" was phased out of active service by 1969, replaced by the F-4 Phantom II in the strike role, although Wild Weasel F-105G aircraft remained until the end.
Some aircraft remained in service with Air National Guard units, but their heavy wartime service meant that many F-105s had already reached or exceeded their service lives by the mid-1970s.

Following their withdrawal from Southeast Asia, the few Thunderchiefs to survive combat in Vietnam served with active duty Air Force units for a couple more years, primarily with the 23rd TFW at McConnell AFB and with the 18th TFW at Kadena AB on Okinawa.

No Thunderchiefs were actually procured as F-105Fs from the beginning.
Although the visibility from the rear cockpit was too limited to make the F-105F a practical conversion trainer, it was nevertheless a useful aircraft for check rides and in instructing new pilots in the use of the complex bombing and navigational equipment.
However, because of the nature of their missions, losses of the Wild Weasel F-105Fs were heavy, with five of the first eleven examples having been lost by the end of August.

Although the Thunderchief was a superb strike fighter, it was under powered for the heavy loads it was intended to carry and could not be modified into a satisfactory air superiority fighter.
The F4H-1 was much more versatile than the Air Force's F-105 Thunderchief, since it could not only carry similar external loads but was also potentially a much better air superiority fighter due to its more favorable wing and power loadings.

This arrangement improves low-speed performance, allowing the plane to fly into and out of shorter runways than would otherwise be possible.
Originally intended as a pure strike aircraft replacement for the F-100 Super Sabre and the F-105 Thunderchief, the air force then decided to add on fighter capability, specifying a top speed of Mach 2.5 at high altitude.
These difficult engineering requirements were then complicated even further by the politicians when the secretary of defense Robert McNamara insisted that the plane be suitable for both the air force and the navy.
