All major allied air attacks were supported by Ravens that teamed with other Air Force and allied electronic combat units to cause a rapid collapse of the enemy air defense system.
The EF-111A SIP was the first major upgrade to the Raven since the aircraft's introduction into the Air Force in 1981.
The Raven's replacement, the Prowler, is a four-seat derivative of the highly successful A-6 Intruder.

The EF-111 Raven is a modified early version F-111 Aardvark with all weapons removed and carrying the ALQ-99E Jamming system, which is a modified version of the system that is carried on Navy EA-6B Prowler, in the aircrafts ordnance bay and multiple other modifications to allow for the operation of the aircraft's ECM equipment.
While the aircraft are not as heavily armored as aircraft built in the time of the Rifts, the refitting of the aircraft with new MDC armor allows the aircraft to have some survivability in mega damage combat.
Unlike the Aardvark, The Raven has no hard points and the main modifications have been to simply upgrade the aircraft's armor so that it can be hit by enemy fire and not be automatically destroyed.

 Grumman EF-111A Raven
First deliveries of EF-111A Ravens were made to the 390th Electronic Combat Squadron of the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing at Mountain Home AFB in Idaho in November 1981 and to the 42nd ECS of the 20th TFW at RAF Upper Heyford in February 1984.
Even though the Raven is unarmed and has no air-to-air capability, the Raven crew was given credit for the kill.
The USAF retired the final examples of the EF-111A Raven from service with the 429th ECS of the 27th FW at Cannon AFB, New Mexico on May 2, 1998.

For the Navy, this means that all of its strike aircraft will have to be equipped, for the foreseeable future, with self-protection equipment such as flares to distract heat-seeking missiles, chaff to confuse radar, and towed decoys that can mimic the aircraft's electromagnetic signatures.
The F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet will host an integrated defensive EW suite that detects and deceives hostile sensors by using all of these methods.
But it is not possible to equip strike aircraft with all of the EW systems they would need to successfully counter advanced air defenses, so they will continue to require standoff and escort jamming from planes like the Prowler.

Another story I heard (fact ot fiction) was that the first air-to-air combat kill in Desert Storm was not accomplished by and F-117 or F-15 like you saw on the news, (those guys always got the publicity)but by an EF-111 who tactically out-maneuvered his adversary causing him to crash.
I was stationed at Mt. Home from 1982 to 1986 and worked on both the EF and the F. I remember saying good bye to the base F aircraft and see the same planes return as the EF.

AFAIK, today The Navy EA-6B Prowler is the only one tactical EW aircraft out there among the wolrd air force inventory, since the retirement of The Air Force EF-111 Raven some years ago, though EA-18G Growler will be in the near future.
So, what's the problem of having some tac EW assests in your air force?
On the up-side, the changes to make an F/A-18G are fairly easy at the time of manufacture and the airplane retains all the capabilities of the base F/A-18F (although its empty weight is a bit higher).
