Die Ecole française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) ist ein 1901 gegründetes französisches Institut zur wissenschaftlichen Erforschung der süd-, südost- und ostasiatischen Geschichte und Kultur.
Von Wissenschftern der EFEO wurde auch ein frühes System zur Übersetzung der chinesischen Sprache entwickelt, das allerdings heute nicht mehr benutzt wird.
In den 1930er Jahren restaurierten Mitarbeiter der EFEO in Vientiane den ältesten noch erhaltenen Tempelbau der Stadt, den Wat Satasahatsaham (auch Wat Si Saket).

The seat of the EFEO was moved to Paris and established in the Maison d'Asie at 22 avenue du Pr‚sident-Wilson in 1968.
The EFEO remains attached to its traditional emphasis on the study of primary sources -archaeological, written, and oral- and requires of its members a knowledge of the relevant written and spoken languages.
The EFEO maintains co-operative programmes with European and especially Asian universities and research centres including Sophia university in Tokyo, the Academia Sinica in Taipei, the Chinese University in Hong Kong, Silpakorn in Bangkok, the National Institute of Archaeological Research in Jakarta, Deccan College of the University of Poona.

EFEO?s research and documentation techniques left a legacy of expertise that the Vietnamese successor institutes have emulated as they continue to collect and document epigraphic and textual material.
Part of the EFEO collection remained in the custody of the NCSSH library, while the rest was moved to the Historical Institute in Hanoi which had opened in 1956.
In recent years, the EFEO staff, who are respected scholars with privileged access and influence in archives and libraries, have become increasingly interested in promoting their scholarship internationally.

Co-organized by the NPM and the Paris-based research institution l'Ecole franaise d'Extreme-Orient (EFEO), it was the first in a projected series of workshops aimed at promoting the study and appreciation of Asian arts in Taiwan.
It was shortly thereafter, in 1889 that the EFEO was established in Saigon as the Mission archeologique d'Indochine.
EFEO's objective has from the outset been to engage in archaeological exploration, preserve ancient structures, collect manuscripts and study the linguistic heritage of the regions which once formed French Indochina.

In 1975, as the Khmer Rouge forces close in on the capital, the EFEO office in Phnom Penh is ransacked and all records on the Baphuon project disappear.
Jacques Dumarcay, the EFEO architect who had supervised the Baphuon project in the 1960s, had since retired but was eager to help to see the work completed, said Royere.

L’Ecole Francaise d’Extreme-Orient (EFEO) or the “French Research School of the Far East” was first established in Saigon/Vietnam in 1898 as the Archaeological Mission in Indochina and received its current name in 1900, when the headquarters were moved to Hanoi.
The objective of the EFEO was to engage in archaeological exploration, the collection of manuscripts, and the conservation of monuments, as well as the study of the linguistic heritage of the region, which then formed French Indo-China.
As the consequence of the wars and revolution in Indochina, the EFEO headquarters had to be relocated to the French capital Paris in 1960.

The afternoons were devoted to reading classes with the pandits of the Centre of the EFEO in Pondicherry.
This course was meant to be one of the first advanced level, and we are intending to offer a sequel scheduled for next February: as usual a four-week reading group, but this time we are planning to read two texts, each for two weeks.

The Khmer Rouge destroyed all of the archaeological records that were left behind, and the EFEO has had to start all over trying to decide which stones go where.
As a result of the restoration work, the temple is no longer open to tourists; we could only view it from a distance (see the photo at left).
It was rebuilt using anastylosis by the EFEO in the 1960's, and is in good condition today.

For his written archives, he chose the EFEO, a French government organization that has been involved in the restoration of Angkor monuments and in the study of Khmer language and culture for more than a century.
The EFEO will make Norodom Sihanouk’s documents available to researchers and historians as soon as they have been archived, which should be around 2006, de Bernon said.

 Project 18
After an exploratory mission in september 1995 followed by a period of initial contacts and prospecting in the Mekong Delta in january 1996, a projet started studying the archaeology of different sites in the Mekong delta, often refered to what is called in Vietnam the Oc Eo culture.
This project is the result of a collaboration between archaeologists of the Archaeology centre of the social sciences Institute of Hochiminh-Ville and the Ecole Française d'Extrême Orient (EFEO).
The sites contain archaeological remains left by a powerful state with maritime activities which has thrive in the Mekong Delta between the 1st and the VIth century AD.

Member of EFEO, Dr. Christophe Pottier has been based in Angkor since 1992 as an architect to reopen the EFEO office in Siem Reap and to conduct some restoration projects (Terrace of Leprous King and northern staircase of Terrace of Elephant in Angkor Thom).
Since then, he continued his research on ancient territorial planning and directed the French-Cambodian Archaeological Mission on the Angkor Region, a collaboration of the French Ministry of the Foreign Affairs, APSARA and EFEO.
The presentation will take place July 17th, at 6:30 pm in the EFEO library.
