SAL- Programming - Languages & Compilers - egcs
egcs is an experimental step in the development of GCC, the GNU C compiler.
egcs is a collaborative effort involving several groups of hackers using an open development model to accelerate development and testing of GNU compilers and runtime libraries.
However, egcs has been carefully tested and should be comparable in quality to most gcc releases.

EGCS 1.1 Caveats - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation (FSF)
EGCS has an integrated libstdc++, but does not have an integrated libg++.
In general, EGCS is more rigorous about rejecting invalid C++ code or deprecated C++ constructs than g++-2.7, g++-2.8 or EGCS 1.0.
EGCS 1.1 compiled C++ code is not binary compatible with EGCS 1.0.x or GCC 2.8.x due to changes necessary to support thread safe exception handling.

The loss of `stemness' as EGCs remain in culture could be due to EGCs continuing to follow the differentiation pathway to PGC fate, or imprinting alterations in culture (19, 20).
Murine EGCs were derived years before human EGCs, and it was the culturing conditions and characterization techniques developed for murine cells that were the basis for human EGC derivation (24).
The EGCs were further characterized to show Oct-4 expression and telomerase activity, which are both important ESC properties (14).

EGCS Frequently Asked Questions   (Site not responding. Last check: )
EGCS is not the first piece of software to use this open development process; FreeBSD, the Emacs lisp repository, and Linux are a few examples of the bazaar style of development.
An EGCS release is a copy of the EGCS sources that the developers have tested and are believed to be suitable for wider scale use and testing.
To ensure that EGCS finds the GNU assembler (the GNU loader), which are required by some configurations, you should configure these with the same --prefix option as you used for EGCS.

When a single conductor EGC cable is used, the single conductor EGC cable must be sized for the fuse rating or circuit breaker trip setting (NEC Table 250-95) of the highest capacity circuit in the cable tray that would potentially utilize the single conductor EGC cable if a ground fault should occur.
In a moisture laden environment, a bare copper EGC should not be installed in an aluminum cable tray due to the potential for electrolytic corrosion of the aluminum cable tray.
Electrically paralleling the single conductor EGC with the Cable Tray by bonding the single conductor EGC to the cable tray every 50 to 100 feet produces an installation that may provide some degree of improved electrical safety for a facility and its personnel during ground fault conditions.

EGCS can now be taken orally or sprayed on a wound, burn or rash, and no shots are necessary.
In 1977, Dr. William Foye showed that EGCS was great for dealing with tonsillitis, rhinitis (stuffy or runny nose), and conjunctivitis (pink eye and related eye infections.) Later, researchers used EGCS to kill syphilis and malaria bacteria.
Knowing that EGCS kills over 650 kinds of disease--causing microbes, it is ideal to have around the house to use when you feel something coming on or you get a cut, burn or rash.

LWN: The Future of XFree86 - like gcc v. egcs?
The analogy of gcc vs. egcs may be a good one, as far as assuaging fears of "duplicated effort".
Egcs forked in order to bring a more bazaar-like development style to the project for bug fixes, optimization improvements, etc., but never strayed far from the original interface.
But a major difference is that everything egcs did was in the open, here it seems one person worked behind the scenes to start a fork, and also made very large changes to CVS without consulting anybody.
