Mandragor & Apinc - Free Documentation Base
EGP provides a means for different autonomous gateway systems to exchange information about the networks that are reachable via them.
EGP is generally conducted between gateways in different AS's that share a common network, that is, neighbor gateways.
The EGP process routing tables are maintained as two separate tables, one for exterior routes (via different AS gateways) and one for interior routes (via the gateways of this AS).

[Chapter 7] 7.5 Exterior Routing Protocols   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
EGP is not a generic term; it is a particular exterior routing protocol, and an old one at that.
When EGP was designed, the network relied upon a group of trusted core gateways to process and distribute the routes received from all of the autonomous systems.
EGP reachability information was passed into the core gateways, where the information was combined and passed back out to the autonomous systems.

Zvon - RFC 911 [EGP GATEWAY UNDER BERKELEY UNIX 4.2] - GATEWAY DESIGN
EGP is a polling protocol with loose timing constraints.
EGP Updates are used to update the exterior routing table if one of the following is satisfied: - No routing table entry exists for the destination network and the metric indicates the route is reachable (< 255).
If the interior routing table includes other interior gateways on the network shared with the EGP neighbor they are include in Updates as the appropriate first hop to their attached networks.

A knowledge of EGP as described in [SeamonsonandRosen84; Mills84a] is assumed.
With the introduction of EGP, the internet gateways will be divided into a "core" autonomous system (AS) of gateways maintained by Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN) and many "stub" AS's that are maintained by different organizations and have at least one network in common with a core AS gateway.

Computers communicating via EGP are called EGP neighbors, and the exchange of HELLO and I-H-U messages is referred to as acquiring a neighbor.
This metric may be overridden by a metric specified on the neighbor or group statements or in export policy.
EGP neighbors must be specified as members of a group.

EGP as reachability protocol The EGP (Exterior Gateway Protocol) routing method will be used to exchange reachability information between the NSFNET backbone and the regional networks.
EGP by itself has no provisions to guarantee that routes through the NSFNET Backbone will be preferred over routes through the backdoor routers or vice versa.
If the EGP metrics cannot be defined or if they are not fixed the metric determination will be done by the NSFNET backbone routers, as taken from their databases, themselves.

 About NIEHS EGP - History
The EGP was announced as an NIEHS-sponsored initiative in September, 1997, when NIEHS made a public announcement inviting scientists to participate in planning the project.
The EGP planning process and the concept of the EGP was first fully explored by the scientific community at a NIEHS-sponsored Symposium held at Masur Auditorium on the NIH campus on October 17-18, 1997.
The EGP seeks to compare selected regions of the human genome sequence in different individuals to determine how much and where there is sequence variation, also called DNA polymorphism.

Environmental Health Perspectives: The EGP at five years - Environmental Disease
The EGP was initiated in 1998 with a dual goal: providing information on how individual genetic differences affect disease risk from environmental agents, and proposing appropriate environmental policies in response to that information.

Packenham said the symposium was intended to make the scientific community aware of research being conducted within the EGP and the consortium, and was organized specifically to bring together scientists from two different communities under the EGP: mouse modelers and epidemiologists.
