EH.Net Encyclopedia: An Economic History of Patent Institutions
Ultimately, the realization that England’s early industrial and technological supremacy was threatened by the United States and other nations in Europe led to a slow process of revisions that lasted well into the twentieth century.
Industrial entrepreneurs succeeded in their objective of creating a "first to file" system, so patents were granted to the first applicant rather than to the "first and true inventor," but in 1936 the National Socialists introduced a first to invent system.
Instead of monopoly awards to inventors, their efforts could be rewarded by alternative policies, such as stipends from the government, payments from private industry or associations formed for that purpose, or simply through the lead time that the first inventor acquired over competitors by virtue of his prior knowledge.

The Corporation as Family: The Gendering of Corporate Welfare, 1890-1930 | Book Reviews | EH.Net
The real Victorian family performed a dual mission: to train children to take their place in industrial society, and to provide a home that would be a refuge from the harsh realities of industrialism.
The desire to pattern labor relations after the Victorian family model was rooted in the turn-of-the century debates over the "crisis" in the family as many families, especially working-class and immigrant ones, failed to live up to the idealized Victorian model.
These families also seemed the most vulnerable to the changes wrought by urbanization and industrialization, and were targeted by welfare workers.

EH.Net Encyclopedia: An Overview of the Great Depression
Although the economy had flattened out after the first wave of bank failures in October–December 1930, with the industrial production index steadying from 79 in December 1930 to 80 in April 1931, the remainder of 1931 brought a series of shocks from which the economy was not to recover for some time.
The industrial production index of 114 in August 1929 was at 54 in March 1933, or a 52.6 percent decrease.
In effect, the NIRA was a license for industries to form cartels and was struck down as unconstitutional in 1935.

By far the greatest let-down for the Canadian defence establishment and the Canadian defence industry, however, was the absence of a cabinet decision on the 'country-of-origin' for the SSN programme.
