U.Va. and the Ecole (EHESS) have had an informal tie through U.Va. history professor Olivier Zunz for a dozen years, since he began giving a seminar in North American history there each May. "This agreement will solidify and extend U.Va.'s informal exchange," Zunz said.
U.Va. Director of International Studies Ronald Dimberg said that although "the EHESS exchange starts at the faculty level, [it] includes provisions for a student exchange, joint research projects and jointly sponsored conferences and symposia.
EHESS "has the best that France has to offer," noted Zunz, adding that the institution has a tradition of supporting innovative scholars, including historian Fernand Braudel and anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss, two of the founding directors in 1947, and more recently, philosopher Jacques Derrida.
