		DMX512 is an adaptation of the Industry Standard EIA485 or RS-485 interface.
		As with any transmission line the cable should be correctly terminated to prevent reflections of data back down the line as they may cause interference and corrupt the data.
		The EIA485 specification supports daisy-chain networking with up to 32 unit loads on a single line providing a 120ohm termination load is placed at the end across the data lines.

		DMX 512 is just a communications protocol, so the wiring practice aren't described in DMX 512 standards, but in the requirements of the EIA485 industrial interface (also know as RS 485), which must be followed and specifies the voltages, currents and components to be used.
		At present, the majority of DMX transmitters and receivers are manufactured in compliance with the standard, so the weak point of an installation could be the type of cables used and the way in which the DMX line is prepared.
		The importance of cables Cables must be in compliance with EIA485 characteristics and, as per DMX512 specifications, must be of the 2-pair screened type, even if at present it's sufficient to install just one screened pair.

		The actual electrical method by which the digital 1s' & 0s' are spit out by your console and then recieved by all the gear on stage is also important to understand, in view of the fact that 80% of your problems are caused by distortion, in some way, of the physical DMX512 signal.
		EIA485 says that it should be AT LEAST 200 milivolts or 1/5th of a volt.
		The cable should be of instrumentation grade as suggested for EIA485 use, with TWISTED pairs (if you want them to catch the noise equally, they should entwine each other !!) and a good shielding braid and foil.

		EIA485 is also called the RS485 standard, but the term RS485 is out-dated.
		Up to 32 transmitters and 32 receivers may be interconnected in any combination, including one driver and multiple receivers (multi-drop), or one receiver and multiple drivers.
		EIA-485 devices may be used in 422 circuits, but EIA-422 may not be used in 485 circuits (because of the lack of an Enable line).

		However, it's simple and reliable (providing it is installed and used correctly!) and has proved itself to be quite flexible, witness the growing list of controlled devices other than just plain ol' dimmers.
		EIA485 only describes the "electrical" side of the interface, voltages, currents etc.
		Direct-on-Line interfacing by connecting a high sensitivity opto-isolator directly across the line is not recommended, it presents about 5 times the load of a proper receiver thus reducing the number of receivers that can be installed on the segment.

		The low voltage differential is a requirement for the higher speeds at a reasonable cost and is the only way to have adequate skew budgets.

		As far as I remember, EIA485 does not mention a connector at all, so anyone can use any connector and any pinout, as you discovered yourself.
		For signal specification, simply use EIA485 integrated circuits (transceivers).
